Winery Background and History

Weingut Bründlmayer, located in Langenlois, Kamptal, Austria, is a family-owned estate renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation. Established in the mid-20th century, the winery has become a benchmark for Austrian viticulture, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. With a focus on sustainable practices, Bründlmayer cultivates a variety of grapes, including Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, crafting wines that are both expressive and elegant.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate is helmed by Willi Bründlmayer, a visionary winemaker dedicated to showcasing the potential of Austrian wines on the global stage. Willi’s approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the vineyard’s character to shine through. His meticulous attention to detail and passion for excellence have earned Bründlmayer international acclaim, solidifying its reputation as one of Austria’s premier wineries.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein vineyard, situated at elevations between 230 and 345 meters, boasts unique Permian desert sandstone soils interspersed with volcanic inclusions and carbonized remains of primeval vegetation. This unique terroir contributes to the wine’s density and complexity. The vineyard’s south and southwest-facing slopes benefit from warm days and cool nights, fostering optimal ripening conditions that preserve acidity and enhance aromatic expression.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes were hand-harvested in October 2021 and underwent spontaneous fermentation in large Austrian oak barrels. Post-fermentation, the wine matured on gross lees in these barrels, enhancing texture and complexity while preserving purity and freshness. This method imparts subtle oak nuances, allowing the wine to develop structure and harmony.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Riesling Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein presents a brilliant, multi-layered bouquet featuring vineyard peaches, white flowers, and lemon peel combined with cool spice. On the palate, it is fresh, crystal clear, and gracefully built, showcasing lemon zest, white currant, and a touch of juvenile yeast. The wine is very dense and full of finesse, displaying the typical salty tone in its long finish, representing an excellent “Grand Cru” of this elegant vintage.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Riesling pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, including seafood, grilled fish, white meats, and various Asian cuisines. Its balanced structure and nuanced flavors also complement Austrian specialties like Wiener Schnitzel or Tafelspitz, where the wine’s acidity and fruit profile enhance the flavors of the cuisine.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and flavor depth, serve the wine chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes in the glass can enhance its expressive qualities. Use white wine glasses with a narrow bowl to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—the 2021 Riesling Ried Zöbinger Heiligenstein has the potential to age gracefully for 10–15 years. Over time, it will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of honey, nuts, and dried fruit emerging. Regular monitoring is advised to enjoy the wine at its peak maturity.
