Distillery Background and History

 


The Singleton brand represents a trio of Speyside single malts owned by Diageo, with the Dufftown expression being the most widely recognized in Europe. Dufftown is often described as the “whisky capital of the world” due to its concentration of distilleries and long tradition of whisky production since the late 19th century. This 12-year-old expression exemplifies the region’s characteristic smooth, fruity style. 

 


 

 

Producer and Master Distiller

 


Produced by Diageo under the Singleton label, the whisky is crafted by the Dufftown Distillery team. While individual master distillers aren’t always highlighted publicly, the production reflects Diageo’s broad expertise in cask selection, maturation and quality control across its Speyside malt portfolio. 

 


 

 

Raw Materials and Terroir

 


Made from 100 % malted Scottish barley, fermented with proprietary yeast and distilled with pure Speyside water (notably from sources like Jock’s Well). Whisky doesn’t express “terroir” as wine does, but the high-quality barley, local water and Speyside climate help give this whisky its smooth, clean character. 

 


 

 

Distillation Method and Still Type

 


Distilled in traditional copper pot stills, typical of Scotch single malt production. The process involves a relatively slow batch distillation that enhances malt sweetness and aromatic balance. 

 


 

 

Maturation and Cask Management

 


Matured for 12 years in a combination of predominantly American oak ex-bourbon casks with a smaller portion of European oak (often ex-sherry) casks, the marriage of these woods contributes to a smooth profile featuring gentle sweetness and subtle fruit and spice notes. 

 


 

 

Tasting Notes

 


Colour: Light golden amber. 

Nose: Fresh and inviting fruitiness — ripe apples and pears, honeyed vanilla, a touch of cinnamon and subtle oak. 

Palate: Smooth and mellow with flavours of dried fruit, toffee, malt sweetness, toasted hazelnut and gentle oak spice. 

Finish: Clean, balanced and softly lingering with sweet oak and mellow fruit notes. 

 


 

 

Food Pairing and Consumption Style

 


Pairs nicely with caramel or toffee desserts, dark chocolate, roasted nuts and mature cheeses. Its approachable profile also works well with lighter meat dishes, grilled salmon or creamy pastas. Enjoy as a relaxed neat pour, over a large ice cube, or with a splash of water to open softer flavours. 

 


 

 

Service Methods and Temperatures

 


Serve neat in a tulip-shaped or Glencairn glass at 18-20 °C to concentrate aromas. A few drops of spring water can help release deeper fruity and sweet oak notes without diluting the whisky’s balance. 

 


 

 

Storage and Aging Potential

 


Store upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and heat. Once bottled, whisky does not continue ageing, but maintains its quality and balance for many years when stored properly.
