Distillery Background and History

Jameson was founded in 1780 by John Jameson, who took control of the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin. Over time, the distillation operations shifted to the New Midleton Distillery in County Cork, but Jameson remains one of the most iconic Irish whiskey brands. 


Master Distiller and Production Philosophy

Jameson is produced by Irish Distillers (Pernod Ricard). The philosophy is to blend pot still and fine grain whiskeys, then triple distill them to achieve a balance of smoothness, complexity, and approachability. 


Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)

Jameson uses malted and unmalted barley (pot still style) and fine grain whiskey in its blend. The grains are sourced from Ireland (within ~ fifty miles of the distillery). Water is drawn from local springs near Midleton. 


Distillation Process

Jameson is triple distilled in copper pot stills. This extra distillation is intended to produce a smoother spirit with reduced harshness, while retaining congeners for flavor. 


Maturation & Cask Information

Jameson is matured in a combination of oak casks, including ex-bourbon and sherry casks. The aging minimum is four years for the standard Jameson expression. 


Tasting Notes

Nose: Light floral fragrance, spicy wood, sweet notes. 

Palate: Balanced spice, nut, vanilla, with hints of sweet sherry. 

Finish: Smooth and lingering. 


Food & Wine Pairing Suggestions

Pairs nicely with lighter desserts (vanilla custard, apple pie), soft cheeses, smoked salmon, grilled vegetables, and dishes with gentle spice or nutty flavours.


Service Methods and Ideal Glassware

Serve neat, or with a drop of water. Use a tulip or Glencairn glass to concentrate aromas. Ideal serving temperature ~16-18 °C.


Storage and Aging Potential

Once bottled, Jameson is stable and not intended for further aging. Store upright in a cool, dark environment (~15-20 °C). After opening, best consumed within 1-2 years to preserve aromatic freshness.
