Distillery Background and History
Chivas Regal is a premium blended Scotch whisky brand produced by Chivas Brothers, now part of the Pernod Ricard group. Its roots go back to Aberdeen in the early 19th century, evolving into a globally recognized name in luxury Scotch. The 18-year expression was introduced to elevate the blend range beyond the standard 12, offering a richer, more mature profile.
Master Distiller and Production Philosophy
The 18 Year is overseen by Chivas’s blending team, under the leadership of Master Blender Sandy Hyslop. Their approach is to select rare, older cask whiskies and blend them with precision so the end result retains harmony, depth, and a house character of elegance.
Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)
As a blend, Chivas 18 draws from multiple malt and grain whiskies from across Scotland. The malt whiskies include Speyside malts (notably Strathisla), while grain whiskies come from various grain distilleries. Water and yeast sources are those typical to each component distillery.
Distillation Process
The malt component whiskies are distilled in copper pot stills via the traditional double distillation process, while grain components come from column stills. The art lies in blending these matured whiskies rather than a single distillation innovation.
Maturation & Cask Information
Chivas 18 is aged for a minimum 18 years in oak casks. The blend uses a selection of matured stocks from casks that deliver layered complexity. The exact cask mix (ex-bourbon, ex-sherry, etc.) is proprietary.
