Bruichladdich Black Art 10.1
Country: Scotland
Region: Islay
Volume: 700ml
Distillery Background and History
Bruichladdich Distillery is nestled on the Rhinns of Islay, Scotland. Founded in 1881, the distillery experienced prolonged periods of dormancy before being revived in 2001 and acquired by Rémy Cointreau in 2012. Known for its unique approach to terroir and craftsmanship, Bruichladdich has a long tradition of producing unpeated, mansion-quality single malts—including the enigmatic Black Art series, which pushes creative and experimental boundaries.
Master Distiller and Production Philosophy
The Black Art series is guided by Head Distiller Adam Hannett, who is granted complete creative freedom. With no predefined recipe, his approach emphasizes trusting time and nature to imbue character, resulting in whisky that’s intentionally mysterious and irreproducible.
Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)
Details about the grain, water source, and yeast remain undisclosed—part of the mystique of Black Art. However, Bruichladdich traditionally uses 100% Scottish barley (often Islay-grown) and water from local sources such as the Bruichladdich Loch and Octomore spring.
Distillation Process
This single malt is produced using traditional copper pot stills. The distillation process remains standard and undisclosed in Black Art—emphasis is on mystery, not method.
Maturation & Cask Information
Aged for 29 years in pre‑Renaissance casks that matured silently over decades. The exact cask types are undisclosed, deepening the release’s allure. This edition is unpeated, non chill-filtered, and non–colorant.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and syrupy—honeyed dates, sweet oak, apricot, pastry notes. A faint whisper of Islay’s character adds depth.
Palate: Full-bodied yet balanced; honey, baked apple crisp, apricot, buttercream, pastry, malt, soft pepper, and a hint of ash.
Finish: Long, sweet, complex—pastry and syrupy fruit with pepper, ash, and a soft, lingering warmth.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pair with rich desserts like apricot tart or crème brûlée, honey-glazed foie gras, spiced cakes, or aged mild cheeses—complements the honeyed, pastry notes beautifully.
Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware
Serve neat, or with a few drops of water to unlock layers. Use a Glencairn crystal glass at ~17–19 °C for best aromatics and mouthfeel.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store upright in a cool, dark place. Fully mature at 29 years; further aging in bottle won’t greatly transform the character—best enjoyed now.
Grain Type & Mash Bill (if applicable)
Single Malt Scotch Whisky; specific barley and mash are undisclosed.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
45.1%
