Black Stallion Estate Winery, situated on the historic Silverado Trail in Napa Valley, California, occupies the former site of a renowned equestrian center, which inspired its name. Established in 2007, the winery is part of the Delicato Family Wines portfolio, a family-owned company with a rich history in winemaking. Black Stallion focuses on producing small-lot, handcrafted wines that reflect the diverse terroir of Napa Valley, emphasizing quality and expression of varietal character.

The 2021 Heritage Los Carneros Pinot Noir is crafted by the winemaking team at Black Stallion Estate Winery, led by Winemaker Ralf Holdenried. With a philosophy centered on minimal intervention, the team selects premium grapes from Napa Valley’s esteemed vineyards. Their approach combines traditional techniques with modern technology to create wines that are both expressive and balanced, showcasing the unique characteristics of each vintage and vineyard site.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Los Carneros AVA, which spans both Napa and Sonoma counties. This region is characterized by its cool climate, influenced by fog and breezes from the nearby San Pablo Bay. The combination of sunny days, cooling fog, and thin clay soils are tailor-made for Pinot Noir, contributing to the development of complex aromas and flavors of cherry, red berry, spice, earth, and cola. 

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2021 Heritage Los Carneros Pinot Noir underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the varietal’s delicate aromas and flavors. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged in 39% new French oak barrels, which imparted subtle oak spices and enhanced the wine’s complexity. This aging process allowed the wine to develop a smooth texture and integrate its fruit and oak characteristics harmoniously. 

Tasting Notes

This medium-bodied Pinot Noir opens with lush red fruit aromas of strawberry and blackberry, accompanied by a hint of spice. On the palate, flavors of pomegranate are complemented by round black tea-like tannins, leading to a balanced and elegant finish.
