Ardbeg 'Smokiverse' Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Producer Background & History: Ardbeg is one of Scotland’s most iconic Islay distilleries, renowned for intensely peated single malts and a passionate global following. Founded in the early 1800s on the rugged south coast of Islay, the distillery’s peaty expressions have become legendary among Scotch whisky lovers, particularly through releases tied to its annual celebration, Ardbeg Day.

Distillery & Maker: Ardbeg Distillery Ltd., part of Moët Hennessy (LVMH), produces heavily peated whiskies with coastal maritime character. For this release, the experienced team at Ardbeg applied experimental techniques to push flavour boundaries.

Vineyard Equivalent / Whisky Base: As a single malt Scotch, it’s made entirely from malted barley distilled at Ardbeg’s own distillery on Islay, Scotland — the “terroir” here comes from the island’s peat, salty sea air, and traditional production methods.

ABV %: 48.3 % ABV 

Production & Maturation: This expression marks the first time Ardbeg has used a high-gravity mash — a process that reduces water in the mash tun to create a denser wort, intensifying fermentation and flavour compounds. It was matured in ex-bourbon casks and bottled at natural colour and without chill filtration. 

Tasting Notes:

Appearance: Bright gold colour. 

Nose: Explosive fruity and estery aromas with hints of smoked bubblegum, ripe barley, toasted sourdough, and tropical fruit nuances. 

Palate: Creamy and lush texture with rich peat smoke balanced by muscovado sugar sweetness, tropical fruit, tar, anise, clove, and subtle oak spice. 

Finish: Long and warming, with earthy peat moss, bonfire embers, and charcoal lingering. 

Food & Whisky Pairing: Bold, smoky Islay whiskies like this pair exceptionally well with rich, hearty foods such as smoked meats, mature cheddar, dark chocolate desserts, and even oysters or grilled scallops to echo the maritime character.

Service Methods: Best enjoyed neat or with just a few drops of water to open up the aromatic layers. Serve in a whisky glass at room temperature to appreciate its depth.
