Distillery Background and History

Absolut Vodka is produced in Åhus, Sweden. Established by Lars Olsson Smith in 1879, the brand emphasizes purity and continuity in its production of base vodka. The flavored line Absolut Citron was introduced in 1988 as a citrus variant to expand the brand’s portfolio. 

Master Distiller and Production Philosophy

Absolut blends does not typically publicize a single “master distiller” for its flavored expressions. The philosophy for Citron is to maintain the clean character of the base vodka while layering natural citrus (lemon, lime) flavor, without adding sugar or coloring. 

Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)

The base of Absolut Citron is distilled from winter wheat grown in southern Sweden. The water used is local to Åhus and is filtered for purity. Yeast strains are proprietary to Absolut, designed to ferment the wheat mash cleanly and support aromatic character. 

Distillation Process

Absolut uses continuous distillation (column stills) to achieve a high purity base spirit. The citrus flavor is then infused or blended into that base rather than being created via special distillation steps. 

Maturation & Cask Information

As a vodka (especially a flavored vodka), Absolut Citron is not matured in casks. It is bottled soon after blending.

Tasting Notes

• Nose: Bright lemon zest, tart lime, subtle grapefruit and orange peel. 

• Palate: Fresh citrus (lemon/lime) with a creamy mouthfeel and a clean vodka backbone. 

• Finish: Smooth, zesty citrus linger, no harsh alcoholic burn. 

Food Pairing Suggestions

Pairs well with seafood (oysters, ceviche), light salads with citrus dressings, goat cheese, fruit desserts (lemon tart), or even as a complement to spicy Asian cuisine.

Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware

Serve chilled, neat or over ice. Use a vodka tumbler or narrow tasting glass to preserve aroma. It is also ideal in cocktails such as Lemon Drop, Cosmopolitan, or vodka soda with a citrus twist. 

Storage and Aging Potential

Once bottled, Absolut Citron is stable and does not benefit from further aging. Store it upright in a cool, dark place.
