Winery Background and History

Established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia is one of Spain’s most prestigious wineries, located in the Ribera del Duero Denominación de Origen in Castile and León. The estate gained acclaim for introducing Bordeaux grape varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, to the region. Since 1982, it has been owned by the Álvarez family, who have upheld the winery’s tradition of excellence. Vega Sicilia’s wines are recognized worldwide for their quality and are often compared to the First Growth wines of Bordeaux.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for Valbuena 5º are sourced from the estate’s vineyards, situated at elevations between 700 and 900 meters. The 2019 vintage experienced a drier growing season, with healthy fruit and well-ripened skins, thanks to timely rainfall. The estate’s focus was on achieving freshness without over-ripeness, resulting in a wine that balances power and elegance. 

Vinification & Aging Methods

Valbuena 5º undergoes a meticulous aging process over five years, hence the name. The 2019 vintage was aged for two years: the first year in oak barrels (with a reduced use of American oak in favor of French oak with light toasts) and the second year in large wooden vats. This approach enhances the wine’s texture, elegance, and complexity. 

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Valbuena 5º is expressive and elegant, with a bouquet of violets and blue fruits like blueberries and raspberries. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with beautifully crafted, silky tannins, offering flavors of cherry preserves, mission fig, mocha, and rose petals. The wine is both succulent and muscular, taut and delicate, culminating in a long, satisfying finish. 

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with rich dishes such as roasted lamb, beef tenderloin, and game meats. Its structure and depth also complement aged cheeses and hearty stews, enhancing the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 18°C (64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2019 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years, developing greater complexity and depth over time.
