Founded in 1999 by Susana Balbo, Argentina’s first female enologist, Dominio del Plata is located in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza. Susana Balbo leads the winemaking team at Dominio del Plata, bringing decades of experience and a pioneering spirit to the winery. Her son, José Lovaglio, also contributes as a winemaker, ensuring the family’s legacy continues. Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for BenMarco Expresivo 2019 are sourced from Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, Mendoza. This high-altitude region is known for its calcareous soils and cool climate, which contribute to the wine’s structure and minerality. The combination of sandy soils with gravel bottoms and calcium carbonate layers provides excellent drainage and imparts distinctive characteristics to the grapes. 

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2019 BenMarco Expresivo is a blend of 82% Malbec and 18% Cabernet Franc. The wine underwent fermentation with native yeasts and was aged for 14 months in 100% new French oak barrels. This approach enhances the wine’s complexity while preserving the expression of its terroir. 

Tasting Notes

The wine exhibits a deep, bright ruby color. On the nose, it offers aromas of blackberries, pepper tree, and violets. The palate is fresh and lively, with flavors of ripe red fruit, herbal and floral tones, and a touch of warmth from its 14.5% alcohol content. The wine’s structure is supported by ultra-fine-grained tannins, leading to a long, expressive finish. 

Food & Wine Pairing

BenMarco Expresivo 2019 pairs well with grilled meats, veal, medium-strong cheeses, and dishes with spicy sauces. Its robust structure and vibrant acidity complement hearty meals, making it a versatile choice for various cuisines. 

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the wine at 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet and enhance its flavors. Using large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2019 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 8 to 10 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy nuances, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
