Winery Background and History
Founded in 1970 by Warren Winiarski, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars is one of Napa Valley’s most historically significant estates. The winery gained worldwide acclaim when its 1973 S.L.V. Cabernet Sauvignon won the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris, outperforming renowned French wines and helping establish Napa Valley as a world-class wine region. Located in the Stags Leap District, the estate is now owned by the Antinori family and Ste. Michelle Wine Estates. The winery combines Old World elegance with Napa Valley fruit expression, producing wines recognized for finesse, balance, and vineyard-driven character.
Producer and Wine Maker
The wine is produced by Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars under the direction of winemaker Marcus Notaro. Since joining the estate, Notaro has focused on crafting wines that express freshness, site specificity, and refined structure. His philosophy balances fruit purity with restrained oak influence, emphasizing elegance rather than excessive ripeness. For this Chardonnay, vineyard selection from cooler southern Napa Valley sites is critical to maintaining vibrancy and layered complexity. The winery’s viticulture and cellar teams collaborate closely to harvest fruit at optimal maturity, preserving natural acidity while showcasing Napa Valley’s diverse terroirs.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The fruit is sourced from selected cool-climate vineyards in southern Napa Valley, including Atlas Peak, Carneros, Coombsville, and Oak Knoll District. Atlas Peak contributes citrus intensity and richness, while Carneros benefits from cooling marine breezes from San Pablo Bay that preserve acidity and mineral freshness. Coombsville offers aromatic complexity and delicate fruit expression, whereas Oak Knoll adds freshness and orchard fruit character. The varied elevations, soils, and maritime influences create a layered style combining freshness, texture, and ripeness. The 2024 growing season was warmer than 2023, with an earlier harvest encouraging bright fruit concentration and balanced acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes were harvested between late August and early September during cool morning hours to preserve freshness and aromatic precision. Whole-cluster pressing was used to maintain purity and delicacy. Fermentation was carried out using 92% barrel fermentation and 8% stainless steel fermentation to balance richness and brightness. Malolactic fermentation was partially applied at 13% to soften texture while maintaining crisp acidity. Aging occurred for eight months sur lie in 100% French oak barrels, with 39% new oak and 61% older barrels. This restrained approach enhances texture and spice while allowing fruit expression to remain central.
Tasting Notes
The wine opens with expressive aromas of white peach, lemon-lime zest, honeydew melon, crème brûlée, and subtle floral accents layered with whispers of vanilla and clove. On the palate, it delivers a velvety texture and medium body, balanced by vibrant acidity and mineral freshness. Citrus, orchard fruit, honeysuckle, and delicate oak spice unfold harmoniously, creating both richness and precision. Notes of preserved lemon, salted nuts, and subtle sea spray add complexity. The finish is long, polished, and energetic, lingering with citrus brightness and a refined touch of oak.
Food & Wine Pairing
Its balance of freshness, texture, and subtle oak makes it highly versatile at the table. It pairs exceptionally well with butter-poached lobster, grilled prawns, crab cakes, and seared scallops, complementing rich seafood while refreshing the palate. Roast chicken with herbs, creamy mushroom risotto, and veal piccata also work beautifully due to the wine’s layered fruit and acidity. Soft-ripened cheeses such as Brie or triple cream cheeses enhance its creamy texture. Lightly spiced Asian dishes, grilled vegetables, and lemon-based pasta preparations offer excellent harmony with its citrus-driven profile and elegant finish.
