Rupert & Rothschild Baron Edmond 2021
Country: South Africa
Region: Western Cape
Volume: 750ml
Winery Background and History
Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons is a partnership founded in 1997 by the Rupert family of South Africa and the Rothschild family of France, combining New World and Old World passions for wine. The Baron Edmond is their flagship Bordeaux-style red, named in honor of Baron Edmond de Rothschild, intended to represent the crown of their range.
Producer and Winemaker
The wine is crafted by Rupert & Rothschild’s technical team under winemakers André Roux (and team) in the Franschhoek / Stellenbosch region. The blending and cellar protocol combines precision and maturity, targeting elegance while reflecting South African terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The fruit is sourced from vineyards in Stellenbosch, part of the Western Cape wine regions. The area features Mediterranean climate patterns, with warm days and cooler nights, well-drained soils, and vineyard elevations suited to Cabernet and Bordeaux varieties. The estate also uses drip irrigation and vines aged 10–30 years.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are handpicked, sorted, and fermented in stainless steel with extended skin contact. Only free-run wine is selected. The wine is aged for 18 months in 225-litre French oak barrels, 51 % of which are new oak.
Tasting Notes
The wine displays a deep plum hue. On the nose: black cherry, cassis, liquorice, nutmeg, hints of spearmint and oak spice. On the palate: full and structured, with polished tannins, dark fruit layers, a refined finish, and seamless integration.
Food & Wine Pairing
Pairs beautifully with rich red meats such as grilled beef or venison, lamb with sauces, and hearty game. Also suitable with dishes featuring dark fruit reductions, mushrooms or black pepper sauce.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18 °C. Decant for 30 minutes (or more) before serving to allow aromas and texture to open, especially with time in bottle.
Storage and Aging Potential
This is a wine with good aging potential. Under proper cellar conditions (cool ~12–14 °C, stable humidity, minimal light/vibration), it can develop complexity over 10+ years from vintage.
