Distillery Background and History
The Oban distillery, founded in 1794 by John and Hugh Stevenson in the coastal town of Oban, Scotland, is one of the oldest Highland distilleries. Nestled in a west-coast port, it’s a key member of Diageo’s “Classic Malts” range, blending island smoke with Highland sweetness. With just two pot stills, Oban’s small output contributes to its artisanal status, characterized by coastal influence and maritime character.
Master Distiller and Production Philosophy
While Diageo no longer credits individual master distillers, the-house guided craftsmanship emphasizes gentle peat, balanced fermentation, and precise distillation. Oban follows traditional production with long fermentation in larch washbacks and steam-heated stills to preserve nuanced flavors. The philosophy focuses on expressive, approachable malt with subtle complexity.
Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)
Made from 100% malted barley sourced through Port Ellen Maltings, it uses traditional peat levels. Fermentation uses Diageo’s proprietary yeast in large wooden washbacks. The pure water is drawn from Loch Gleann a’Bherraidh, contributing to the malt’s distinctive smoothness and clean finish.
Distillation Process
Oban uses two steam-heated copper pot stills (one wash still at ~18,800 L and one spirit still at ~8,296 L). It employs a slower distillation cycle to capture rich, oily characteristics. Condensation via worm tubs adds body and texture to the spirit.
Maturation & Cask Information
The core 14-year-old expression matures in ex-bourbon casks, imparting vanilla and honey notes. Some whiskies may include sherry-seasoned oak. The cool, maritime climate of Oban slows maturation, enhancing integration of sweet-fresh and light smokiness. Bottled at 43% ABV with minimal chill filtration.
Tasting Notes
Delicate smoky notes pair with honeyed sweetness, citrus peel, orchard fruits, and sea salt on the nose. The palate delivers cooked fruit, malt, gentle peat, and spice, finishing medium with lingering salt, smoke, and oak.
Food Pairing Suggestions
Pairs well with smoked salmon, grilled seafood, mild blue cheeses, charcuterie, and nuts. Its balance supports roasted poultry and creamy shellfish dishes.
Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware
Serve neat or with a few drops of water in a Glencairn glass at ~15–18 °C to release aromatics without dulling the palate.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store upright in a cool, dark place (~12–16 °C). Since pre-bottled, it will not evolve significantly over time, but remains stable and drinkable for decades.
