Distillery Background and History Maison Martell, founded in 1715 by Jean Martell on the banks of the Charente River in France, is one of the oldest of the great cognac houses. Martell has maintained its reputation for refinement and elegance over three centuries, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary spirit expressions. The Martell Noblige was launched as a modern embodiment of the house’s savoir-faire, its name inspired by the French expression “noblesse oblige,” reflecting both sophistication and responsibility. The brand continues to innovate while honoring its heritage of premium cognac production.
Producer and Cellar Master Martell Noblige is produced by Cognac Martell (Société Martell & Co SA), part of the Pernod Ricard group. The blend is overseen by Martell’s Cellar Master, historically Christophe Valtaud, who ensures each expression reflects the house’s signature balance of smoothness, complexity and aromatic refinement. Martell’s blending philosophy emphasizes harmony between eaux-de-vie from greater Cognac terroirs to create a cohesive, elegant spirit profile.
Vineyards and Micro Climate Martell sources eaux-de-vie from the major crus of the Cognac region, particularly Borderies and Fins Bois. Borderies is prized for clay-rich soils that lend floral, delicate character, while Fins Bois contributes roundness and fruit intensity. The varied micro-climates across these crus balance fruit, spice and structure in the blend, contributing to the expressive aromatic profile of Noblige.
Vinification & Aging Methods Cognac production begins with double distillation of wine made primarily from Ugni Blanc grapes in traditional Charentais copper stills. The eaux-de-vie are matured in fine-grained oak barrels, drawing gentle spice, vanilla and wood complexity over years of aging. Martell’s careful blending of over 100 eaux-de-vie from different terroirs ensures consistent quality, depth and elegance in the final spirit.
Tasting Notes Appearance is dark gold with copper hues. The nose reveals abundant fruit notes of pear and prune, complemented by exotic hints of vanilla pod, caramelized grape and distinctive woody elements such as myrrh, cedar and fine-grained oak. The palate is an elegant marriage of strength and smoothness, with rich fruit, soft spices and wood integration. The finish is long and refined, leaving lingering warmth and complexity.
Food Pairing and Consumption Style Martell Noblige pairs well with rich and savory dishes such as roasted duck with plum glaze, grilled red meats with pepper sauce, and aged cheeses like Comté or Gouda. It also complements dark chocolate and caramel desserts. Enjoy neat, on a large ice cube, or as the base for premium cognac cocktails such as a Cognac Old Fashioned or Noblige Highball with ginger ale.
Service Methods and Temperatures Serve Martell Noblige in a tulip-shaped cognac glass or snifter at room temperature to fully appreciate the aromatic complexity. Avoid chilling to allow the spirit’s full bouquet to emerge. A small splash of non-chlorinated water can open additional nuances. For cocktail service, use premium mixology techniques with quality ice and complementary mixers.
Storage and Aging Potential Store upright in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations. Cognac does not significantly age further in the bottle, so consume within months after opening to preserve aromatic integrity. Unopened bottles stored properly can retain quality for many years.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used Primarily Ugni Blanc grapes are used for the eaux-de-vie that form the blend; exact percentages are proprietary but Ugni Blanc is the dominant varietal in Cognac production.
