Winery Background and History
Domaine de Long Dai, situated in the Qiu Shan Valley of Shandong Province, China, is the ambitious project of Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). Initiated in 2008, the estate represents a fusion of French winemaking expertise and Chinese terroir. The name “Long Dai” translates to “Château of the Mountains,” reflecting the estate’s terraced vineyards nestled among rolling hills. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and precision winemaking, Long Dai aims to produce world-class wines that embody the unique characteristics of its environment.
Producer and Winemaker
Long Dai 2019 is crafted under the guidance of Technical Director Olivier Trégoat and Winemaker Juliette Couderc. Their approach emphasizes meticulous vineyard management and traditional Bordeaux vinification techniques adapted to the local climate. The team employs intra-plot selection to harvest grapes at optimal maturity, ensuring each varietal expresses its full potential. The collaboration between French expertise and Chinese terroir results in a wine that is both authentic and innovative.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The estate’s 30 hectares of vineyards are spread across 360 terraces, a design that preserves the natural landscape and promotes optimal sun exposure. The granitic soils and proximity to the Yellow Sea contribute to a temperate climate with significant diurnal temperature variation. The 2019 vintage experienced a hot and dry growing season, with a notable rainfall event in early August followed by a hailstorm. However, favorable late summer weather allowed for balanced ripening, resulting in grapes with concentrated flavors and elegant tannins.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested between September 21 and October 18, 2019. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks with gentle pumping-over to extract color and tannins. Post-fermentation maceration lasted 18 to 20 days, followed by malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, primarily sourced from Tonnellerie des Domaines in Pauillac, with a mix of new and seasoned barrels to impart complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Tasting Notes
Long Dai 2019 exhibits a deep purple hue. The nose reveals aromas of black cherry, raspberry, and plum, complemented by peppery spice and cedar notes. On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a fresh and lively attack, showcasing a balanced structure and fine-grained tannins. Flavors of blackberries and black cherries intertwine with hints of dark chocolate, leading to a long, elegant finish with lingering warmth and a touch of oak spice.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs well with rich dishes such as roast lamb, duck breast, and mushroom risotto. Its robust structure and complex flavors complement grilled meats and hearty stews, while its elegance allows it to shine alongside fine cheeses and gourmet cuisine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its complexity, decant Long Dai 2019 for at least 60 minutes before serving. Serve at a temperature of 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large Bordeaux-style glasses to enhance its aromatic profile and allow the wine to express its full character.
Storage and Aging Potential
Long Dai 2019 possesses excellent aging potential. When stored in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—the wine can evolve gracefully over the next 10–15 years, developing greater complexity and depth while maintaining its structural integrity.
