Winery Background and History
Jonata, established in 2000 in Ballard Canyon within Santa Barbara County, California, is renowned for its commitment to sustainable farming and producing wines that reflect the unique characteristics of its estate vineyards. The estate spans 600 acres, with 80 acres under vine, and is dedicated to crafting wines that express the distinct terroir of the region. Jonata’s name pays homage to the 1845 Spanish land grant, Rancho San Carlos de Jonata, and reflects the winery’s deep connection to the land and its history.
Producer and Winemaker
Matt Dees, Jonata’s winemaker since 2004, brings a background in soil science and experience from both Napa Valley and New Zealand. His philosophy centers on expressing the individuality of each vineyard block, resulting in wines that are both complex and balanced. Dees’s approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the vineyard to shine through in each wine.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The 2018 La Sangre de Jonata Syrah is sourced from Jonata’s estate vineyards in Ballard Canyon, characterized by sandy soils and a cool maritime climate. These conditions contribute to the wine’s vibrant acidity and nuanced flavor profile. The vineyard’s location benefits from diurnal temperature shifts, which help preserve acidity and enhance the aromatic complexity of the grapes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2018 vintage comprises 97% Syrah and 3% Viognier. Fermentation and aging occurred over 22 months in a combination of 15% new French oak and 85% neutral French oak barrels, with 8% whole cluster inclusion. This regimen imparts depth and complexity while preserving the wine’s freshness.
Tasting Notes
The 2018 La Sangre de Jonata Syrah presents a complex bouquet of dark red cherry, plum fruit, wild flowers, herbs, licorice, mint, and blood orange. On the palate, it offers a full-bodied and precise expression, showcasing its opulent style and impeccable finesse. The flavors harmoniously intertwine, revealing notes of bloody blue and black fruits, ground pepper, and smoked meat. The wine exhibits a full body, solid concentration, and a tannic, long finish. Despite its size and structure, it remains beautifully balanced and shows an elegant, focused profile.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Syrah pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled or roasted red meats, game, and mature cheeses. Its robust structure and complex flavor profile complement the richness of these dishes, while its tannic backbone provides balance. Additionally, the wine’s depth and elegance make it a suitable companion for hearty stews and savory mushroom-based dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its nuances, serve the 2018 La Sangre de Jonata Syrah slightly below room temperature, at 61–64°F (16–18°C). Decanting for one hour prior to serving can enhance its aromatic complexity and allow the wine to open up gracefully. Using appropriate glassware, such as a red wine glass, will also help to showcase the wine’s aromatic complexity.
Storage and Aging Potential
While enjoyable now, the 2018 La Sangre de Jonata Syrah possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully for 15–20 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool temperatures, consistent humidity, and minimal light exposure—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time.
