Winery Background and History

Domaine Jacques Cacheux & Fils, established in the 1950s in Vosne-Romanée, Burgundy, transitioned from supplying grapes to négociants to producing its own wines under Jacques Cacheux’s guidance. Today, the estate is managed by his son, Patrice Cacheux, who continues the family tradition of crafting wines that reflect the elegance and complexity characteristic of the Côte de Nuits region. The domaine’s holdings include parcels in several esteemed appellations, including Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges.

Producer and Winemaker

Patrice Cacheux, both proprietor and winemaker, emphasizes traditional winemaking techniques combined with meticulous vineyard management. His approach focuses on low yields, careful selection, and minimal intervention to allow the terroir to express itself fully. The wines are known for their balance, depth, and reflection of the unique characteristics of each vineyard parcel.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Les Chalandins vineyard is situated in the Vosne-Romanée appellation within the Côte de Nuits. This area benefits from a continental climate with warm summers and cool winters, ideal for Pinot Noir cultivation. The vineyard’s soils are predominantly limestone and clay, contributing to the wine’s minerality and structure. The site’s elevation and exposure provide optimal conditions for ripening, resulting in grapes with balanced acidity and aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a gentle pressing before fermentation. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel vats to preserve the purity of fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with a portion being new oak, for approximately 12 to 18 months. This aging process enhances the wine’s complexity and allows for the development of subtle oak nuances without overpowering the varietal character.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Chalandins presents a luminous ruby hue. On the nose, it offers aromas of ripe red cherries, raspberries, and subtle hints of oak. The palate is vibrant and well-balanced, showcasing flavors of red fruits, spice, and a touch of earthiness. Silky tannins and fresh acidity lead to a refined, elegant finish, reflecting the wine’s terroir-driven character.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including roasted poultry, grilled lamb, and mushroom risotto. Its acidity and tannic structure complement rich sauces and cheeses, making it a versatile choice for both traditional and contemporary cuisine. Consider serving it alongside dishes like duck confit, beef bourguignon, or a selection of aged cheeses for an elevated dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2022 Vosne-Romanée Les Chalandins at a temperature of 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Use Burgundy-style red wine glasses to enhance the wine’s bouquet and texture. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up its flavors and aromas.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 8 to 12 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, truffle, and forest floor, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
