Winery Background and History

Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio is a historic family-run winery in Piedmont, Italy, with roots dating back to 1881. The family acquired the renowned Monprivato vineyard in 1904, located in Castiglione Falletto. This vineyard is celebrated for producing exceptional Nebbiolo grapes, particularly the rare Michet clone. The winery is known for its traditional winemaking methods and commitment to expressing the unique terroir of their vineyards.

Producer and Winemaker

The estate is currently managed by Mauro Mascarello, who continues the family’s legacy of producing high-quality Barolo wines. Under his guidance, the winery maintains its traditional approach, including long macerations and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. Mauro’s dedication to preserving the authenticity of Barolo has solidified the winery’s reputation among connoisseurs.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Monprivato vineyard, situated in Castiglione Falletto, boasts a south-west exposure at an altitude of approximately 280 meters. The soil is a mix of loamy-clay rich in active limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. This microclimate, combined with the unique soil composition, contributes to the complexity and elegance of the wines produced from this site.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2012 Cà d’Morissio is crafted from 100% Nebbiolo grapes, specifically the Michet clone. Fermentation occurs over 25 days, followed by an extensive aging period of approximately 40 months in medium-sized Slavonian oak barrels. The wine is then bottled and further aged, with the entire process spanning six years from harvest to release.

Tasting Notes

This Barolo Riserva presents a garnet red color with orange reflections. The nose reveals aromas of small red fruits in spirit, balsamic notes, leather, tobacco, and dark oriental spices, complemented by hints of resin and undergrowth. On the palate, it is austere and powerful, with evolved and elegant tannins leading to a long, spicy finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

The wine’s robust structure and complex flavors make it an excellent match for rich dishes such as braised meats, game, and aged cheeses. Traditional Piedmontese cuisine, including dishes like osso buco or truffle-infused pasta, would complement its depth and intensity.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate its nuances, decant the wine for at least two hours before serving. Serve at a temperature of 18°C (64°F) in large, tulip-shaped glasses to allow the aromas to fully develop.

Storage and Aging Potential

With its solid structure and balanced acidity, the 2012 Cà d’Morissio has the potential to age gracefully for 20 to 25 years under proper cellaring conditions. Store the wine in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to preserve its quality and allow it to develop additional complexity over time.
