Winery Background and History

Founded in 1825, Domaine Faiveley is a family-owned estate based in Nuits-Saint-Georges, Burgundy. Over seven generations, the Faiveley family has expanded their holdings to include some of the most prestigious vineyards across the Côte d’Or. The estate is renowned for its commitment to traditional winemaking practices, combined with modern techniques, to produce wines that reflect the unique terroirs of Burgundy. Their portfolio includes a range of Grand Cru and Premier Cru wines, showcasing the diversity and richness of the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Currently helmed by Erwan Faiveley, the seventh generation of the family, Domaine Faiveley continues to uphold its legacy of excellence. Under Erwan’s leadership, the estate has embraced sustainable viticulture and invested in modernizing their winemaking facilities. The winemaking team focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the expression of each vineyard’s character. Their meticulous approach ensures that each wine embodies the elegance and complexity characteristic of Burgundy.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Clos des Issarts is a unique 0.60-hectare monopole vineyard located in the southwest of Gevrey-Chambertin, adjacent to the Grand Cru Ruchottes-Chambertin. Acquired by Domaine Faiveley in 2003 after a 50-year lease, it is one of the smallest appellations in Burgundy. The vineyard’s high elevation and eastern exposure provide optimal sunlight, while the limestone-rich soils contribute to the wine’s minerality and finesse. The microclimate, characterized by cool nights and warm days, allows for a slow ripening process, preserving acidity and enhancing aromatic complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo rigorous sorting to ensure only the finest fruit is used. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats, with careful temperature control to preserve the purity of fruit. The wine is then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, with 40-50% new oak, to impart subtle complexity without overpowering the wine’s natural character. This meticulous process results in a wine that balances power and elegance, true to its terroir.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Clos des Issarts exhibits a deep ruby red color. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of ripe black cherry, rose petals, and earthy undertones. On the palate, the wine is well-structured, with silky tannins and a vibrant acidity that provides freshness and balance. Flavors of dark berries, licorice, and subtle oak lead to a long, persistent finish, showcasing the wine’s elegance and depth.

Food & Wine Pairing

This refined Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes such as roast duck, grilled lamb, or mushroom risotto. Its balanced acidity and silky tannins complement the richness of these dishes, while its aromatic complexity enhances their flavors. For cheese pairings, consider soft, bloomy-rind cheeses like Brie or Camembert to highlight the wine’s nuanced profile. The wine’s versatility makes it suitable for both elegant dinners and celebratory occasions.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 16°C to 17°C (61°F to 63°F) in large Burgundy-style glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 1 hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors. This preparation enhances the tasting experience, highlighting the wine’s elegance and depth.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2021 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 8 to 12 years. Over time, the wine will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes such as dried fruits, forest floor, and subtle spice emerging, enhancing its depth and richness.
