Winery Background and History
Founded in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, De Bortoli Wines has grown into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.
Producer and Winemaker
The 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir was crafted under the guidance of Winemaker Kate Webber, who continues the family’s legacy of producing expressive, site-driven wines. Kate emphasizes minimal intervention and a focus on expressing the unique characteristics of the vineyard. Her approach combines traditional techniques with modern practices to produce wines that are both expressive and reflective of their terroir.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Estate Vineyard, located in Dixons Creek within the Yarra Valley, comprises small plots of mature Pinot Noir vines, with plantings dating back to 1971. The Yarra Valley’s cool-climate conditions, characterized by moderate temperatures and diverse soils, contribute to the development of Pinot Noir grapes with complexity and finesse. The 2023 growing season featured a low cropping, cool, and mild climate, allowing for an early March harvest, resulting in grapes with balanced flavors and natural acidity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested and sorted, with each small parcel fermented separately, some with whole bunch inclusion. The wine underwent 15–18 days of maceration and fermentation with wild yeast. After pressing and settling overnight, it was filled to barrel by gravity and allowed to mature for 6 months in new and used 225L and 500L French casks. This vegan-friendly wine was bottled under screw cap to preserve its freshness.
Tasting notes
The 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir exhibits a bright red color. The nose offers expressive aromas of red and dark fruits, wood spice, and violets. On the palate, it presents intense bright flavors, gentle and opulent, with a silky texture. The wine is generous in character, with finesse but soft in style, complex, and quite alluring.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Pinot Noir pairs well with a variety of dishes, including cassoulet with duck and pork sausage, roasted poultry, and game meats. Its vibrant acidity and silky texture also complement dishes like mushroom risotto and soft cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this Pinot Noir, serve it slightly chilled at a temperature between 14–16°C (57–61°F). Use red wine glasses with a slightly wider bowl to allow the aromas to develop. No decanting is necessary. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, spice, and acidity to shine through with elegance and balance.
Storage and Aging Potential
The 2023 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is crafted for both immediate enjoyment and short- to medium-term aging. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness and may develop additional complexity over the next 3–5 years.
