Winery Background and History

Founded in 1976 by Domenico Clerico in Monforte d’Alba, the estate quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to Barolo production. Clerico was a pioneer in adopting modern winemaking techniques while maintaining a deep respect for traditional practices. Over the years, the winery expanded its vineyard holdings to include some of the most esteemed crus in the region. Today, the estate continues to produce wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Langhe, combining power and elegance.

Producer and Winemaker

After Domenico Clerico’s passing in 2017, the winery has been managed by his wife, Giuliana, and a dedicated team committed to upholding his legacy. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the Nebbiolo grape and the nuances of each vineyard site to shine. The team continues to balance modern techniques with traditional methods, ensuring the production of high-quality, expressive Barolos.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The 2020 Barolo del Comune di Monforte d’Alba is sourced from the coolest areas of three renowned vineyards: Pajana and Ciabot Mentin in Ginestra, and Percristina in Mosconi. These sites are characterized by calcareous clay soils and benefit from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. Such conditions contribute to the development of complex aromas, balanced acidity, and firm tannins in the Nebbiolo grapes, resulting in wines with depth and aging potential.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged in large oak casks, with approximately 10% aged in barriques, for a period that allows for the integration of tannins and the development of complexity. This approach ensures that the oak influence remains subtle, preserving the purity of fruit and the expression of terroir.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 vintage exhibits a bright, light ruby color with garnet-red nuances. The nose is spicy and compact, offering notes of wild berries, clove, lemongrass, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, it is velvety and soft, displaying beautiful tension, precise fruit, and fine freshness, leading to a very long finish. Additional aromas include balsamic hints of camphor, cedar, blue flowers, and dark exotic spices. The palate is generous yet elegantly restrained, featuring ripe Morello cherry, raspberry compote, star anise, and cake spice, supported by velvety tannins.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Barolo pairs excellently with rich, savory dishes such as braised meats, game, and aged cheeses. Its robust structure and complex flavors complement dishes like osso buco, wild boar ragù, and truffle-infused risottos. The wine’s acidity and tannins also make it a suitable match for fatty cuts of meat, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at a temperature of 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting for at least one hour is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of aromas and flavors. Use large, tulip-shaped glasses to concentrate the bouquet and enhance the tasting experience.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2020 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy nuances, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
