Winery Background and History

Founded in 1934, Chateau Ste. Michelle is Washington State’s oldest and most acclaimed winery. Located in Woodinville, it has been instrumental in bringing Washington wines to the global stage. The winery combines Old World winemaking traditions with New World innovations, producing a range of wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Columbia Valley. Their commitment to quality and sustainability has made them a benchmark producer in the region.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Chateau Ste. Michelle is dedicated to crafting wines that showcase the best of Washington State. Their approach emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the character of the vineyard to shine through. The team collaborates closely with vineyard managers to ensure optimal grape quality, resulting in wines that are both expressive and balanced.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Canoe Ridge Estate Vineyard, situated in the Horse Heaven Hills AVA, benefits from a unique microclimate. Its south-facing slope above the Columbia River receives ample sunlight, while strong wind patterns and cool nights help moderate temperatures. These conditions contribute to the development of concentrated flavors and balanced acidity in the grapes. The vineyard’s ancient flood-deposited soils further enhance the complexity of the wines produced here.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2019 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve its fresh fruit character. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, with 44% being new oak. This aging regimen imparted subtle notes of vanilla and spice, complementing the wine’s natural fruitiness without overwhelming it.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot offers aromas of blood oranges, black plums, seared steak, and cedar. On the palate, it presents flavors of blackberry and blueberry, accented by hints of saline and pepper. The wine’s muscular tannins provide a solid structure, leading to a long, satisfying finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Merlot pairs well with hearty dishes such as beef tenderloin, lamb chops, or mushroom risotto. Its robust structure and rich fruit flavors complement grilled meats and savory sauces. For a delightful pairing, serve it alongside a wild mushroom risotto or a herb-crusted pork tenderloin.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of the 2019 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot, serve it slightly below room temperature at 16–18°C (60–64°F). Using a Bordeaux-style glass will enhance the wine’s aromatic profile, allowing the delicate fruit and spice notes to shine. Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full complexity.

Storage and Aging Potential

While the 2019 Canoe Ridge Estate Merlot is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it possesses the structure to age gracefully for up to 10 years. Proper storage in a cool, dark environment with consistent temperature and humidity will allow the wine to develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of earth and spice emerging over time.
