Winery Background and History

Château de la Maltroye, located in Chassagne-Montrachet, Burgundy, France, is a historic estate dating back to the 18th century. Recognizable by its glazed tile roof, the château has been under the ownership of the Cournut family since 1939. The estate encompasses over 32 acres in Chassagne-Montrachet and 5 acres in Santenay. Under the guidance of Jean-Pierre Cornut, the domaine has been revitalized, producing some of the finest wines in the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Jean-Pierre Cornut, a former aeronautical engineer, took over the family estate in the late 1990s. His scientific background influences his meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking. Cornut emphasizes low yields, precise vineyard management, and minimal intervention in the cellar to produce wines that are expressive of their origin. Under his leadership, Château de la Maltroye has gained recognition for crafting wines that balance power with elegance.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The vineyards for the Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc are situated in the Côte de Beaune sub-region of Burgundy. The terroir is characterized by limestone-rich soils with varying amounts of clay, providing excellent drainage and mineral richness. The microclimate, influenced by elevation and exposure, contributes to the grapes’ balanced ripening and the wine’s complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo gentle pressing to preserve their quality. Fermentation occurs in oak barrels, with a portion of new oak used to impart subtle complexity. The wine is aged on its lees for several months, enhancing its texture and depth. This traditional Burgundian approach results in a wine that balances freshness with richness, embodying the character of Chassagne-Montrachet.

Tasting Notes

The 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc presents an overtly floral-suffused and expressive nose, offering elegant aromas of white orchard fruit, zest, and a touch of spice. On the palate, it exhibits excellent mid-palate density with pretty middleweight flavors that exude evident minerality. The wine culminates in a powerful, focused, and superbly long finale, showcasing its potential for extended cellaring.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs beautifully with poultry dishes such as roasted chicken or turkey, as well as rich seafood like lobster or scallops. Its freshness and complexity complement creamy pasta dishes and soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert. The wine’s balance makes it a versatile companion for a variety of culinary experiences.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc at 12–14°C (54–57°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. Using a white wine glass with a slightly larger bowl can enhance the expression of its aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can help it open up gracefully.

Storage and Aging Potential

While enjoyable now, the 2022 Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc has the structure to age gracefully for 8–10 years. Proper cellaring conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature—will allow the wine to develop additional complexity and depth over time, revealing nuanced flavors and aromas.
