Winery Background and History
Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia is a joint venture established in 2004 between two prestigious wine families: Tempos Vega Sicilia of Spain and Compagnie Vinicole Baron Edmond de Rothschild of France. Their collaboration aimed to craft high-quality wines in Rioja, Spain’s renowned wine region. After extensive vineyard assessments, the first vintage was released in 2009. The winery focuses on producing wines that combine the elegance of Bordeaux with the character of Rioja, utilizing modern techniques while respecting traditional practices.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Bodegas Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia is dedicated to expressing the unique terroir of Rioja through meticulous vineyard management and innovative vinification methods. Their approach emphasizes precision and balance, ensuring that each wine reflects the harmony between fruit, structure, and aging potential.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Macán 2019 are sourced from 100 hectares of vineyards located in the Sonsierra region of Rioja Alta, encompassing villages like San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida, Ábalos, Navaridas, and Elvillar. These vineyards, situated at an elevation of approximately 500 meters, feature poor, gravelly, clay-limestone soils. The region’s microclimate, characterized by a combination of Atlantic and Mediterranean influences, provides optimal conditions for growing Tempranillo, with significant diurnal temperature variations that enhance grape complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2019 vintage experienced a dry growing season, with limited rainfall in spring and summer. However, 80 liters of rain in early September revitalized the vines, leading to a successful harvest between September 26 and October 9. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks using 10% indigenous yeasts, followed by aging in a combination of French oak barrels (55% new) and large oak foudres (45%) for 16 to 18 months. This approach aimed to balance oak influence with the wine’s natural fruit expression.
Tasting Notes
Macán 2019 presents a deep garnet color. The nose offers aromas of black cherry, aniseed, and vanilla, with subtle hints of clove and eucalyptus. On the palate, flavors of blackberry, ripe cherry, milk chocolate, and orange zest are complemented by lush tannins that provide a velvety texture. The wine concludes with a lingering finish, showcasing its complexity and balance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This full-bodied Tempranillo pairs excellently with grilled lamb, roasted meats, and hearty stews. Its rich fruit profile and structured tannins also complement aged cheeses and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms or savory spices. For an optimal experience, consider pairing with traditional Spanish cuisine such as lamb chops or chorizo-infused dishes.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Macán 2019 at a temperature of 16°C to 18°C (60°F to 64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting the wine for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet and enhance its flavors. Using large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2019 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 10 to 15 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy nuances, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
