Winery Background and History
The winery is located along the historic Silverado Trail in the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, situated on a magnificent equestrian estate that once was home to the Silverado Horseman’s Center. Founded with a vision to honor both the equestrian heritage of the land and the premium grape-growing conditions of the region, the estate was later acquired by the Indelicato family, multi-generational vintners with deep roots in California wine history. The winery specializes in crafting small-lot, artisan wines that showcase the diverse microclimates and premium vineyard terroirs across the valley floor and mountain appellations.
Producer and Wine Maker
The production is guided by Director of Winemaking Ralf Holdenried, who brings decades of international expertise and a deeply structured, precise approach to premium California varietals. Collaborating closely with vineyard managers across the valley, he focuses on micro-lot vinification to isolate the finest characteristics of each specific block. His winemaking philosophy centers on achieving a seamless balance between bold, rich fruit expression and elegant structural integration, ensuring that the flagship reserve bottlings display complex layers, robust mountain tannins, and the classic, opulent texture that defines world-class Napa Valley Cabernet.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The fruit is meticulously selected from premier, low-yielding vineyard blocks across Napa Valley, with a significant portion sourced from high-elevation sites like Atlas Peak alongside select valley floor parcels. The mountain vineyards feature volcanic, rocky, and lean soils that naturally limit vine vigor, forcing the roots deep and concentrating fruit flavors. The microclimate is characterized by warm daytime temperatures that guarantee optimal phenolic ripeness, paired with dramatic overnight cooling from maritime breezes and fog. This significant diurnal temperature swing preserves vital acidity, contributing intensity, structural focus, and refined mineral nuances to the grapes.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The grapes are hand-harvested at peak maturity and undergo rigorous optical sorting upon arrival at the boutique winery facility. The fruit is destemmed and cold-soaked to maximize color and flavor extraction before undergoing temperature-controlled fermentation in small stainless steel tanks. Following fermentation, the extended maceration period softens the structural profile before the wine is transferred to barrels. The maturation program takes place over twenty-eight months in one hundred percent new French oak barrels, with a small portion undergoing unique double-barreling to impart exceptional depth, complex baking spice notes, and integrated tannins.
Tasting notes
The wine opens with an inviting, deeply aromatic bouquet highlighting intense blackberry, ripe blackcurrant, and dark plum, beautifully layered with complex sweet tobacco, graphite, and espresso bean. The palate is full-bodied, rich, and remarkably dense, showcasing a velvety mouthfeel where concentrated dark chocolate and stewed black cherry intermingle with seamless oak influences. Supported by integrated medium-plus acidity and robust, brawny mountain tannins, the mid-palate leads into a wonderfully persistent, dry finish that leaves trailing notes of vanilla, savory cedar, and a touch of chalky loam.
Food & Wine Pairing
This bold, structured red wine demands rich, hearty dishes that can match its muscular frame and concentrated fruit profile. It pairs exquisitely with a prime, well-marbled grilled ribeye steak topped with truffle butter, or a slow-roasted prime rib served with a rich rosemary jus. The firm tannins and vibrant acidity also complement slow-braised beef short ribs, aromatic boeuf bourguignon, and hearty lamb stews cooked with root vegetables. For a cheese course, it pairs beautifully with mature, hard cheeses such as aged white cheddar, gouda, or artisanal pecorino.
