Winery Background and History
Belondrade y Lurton was founded in the 1990s by Didier Belondrade, a Frenchman who recognized the potential of the Verdejo grape in Spain’s Rueda region. His vision was to craft a white wine with the complexity and aging potential akin to Burgundy’s finest. By introducing barrel fermentation and aging to Verdejo, he revolutionized the perception of Spanish white wines, elevating them on the international stage. The winery’s commitment to quality and innovation has solidified its reputation as a benchmark producer in the region.
Producer and Wine Maker
The winery is led by Didier Belondrade, who collaborates closely with a dedicated winemaking team. Their approach emphasizes organic viticulture and meticulous attention to detail in both vineyard and cellar. Each vineyard plot is harvested and vinified separately, allowing for a nuanced expression of the terroir. The team’s philosophy centers on minimal intervention, aiming to let the character of the Verdejo grape and the unique terroir of Rueda shine through in each bottle.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Belondrade y Lurton sources grapes from 23 distinct plots spread across the Rueda region, each contributing unique characteristics to the final blend. The vineyards are situated at elevations around 750 meters, benefiting from a continental climate with hot days and cool nights, which preserves acidity and promotes aromatic development. The soils are predominantly sandy with pebbles, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the mineral complexity of the wines.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2022 vintage underwent spontaneous fermentation in 300- and 500-liter French oak barrels, followed by 9 months of aging on its lees in the same barrels. This process enhances the wine’s texture and complexity. After bottling in July 2023, the wine was aged for an additional 6 months in bottle before release, allowing for further integration of flavors and development of its distinctive character.
Tasting notes
Belondrade y Lurton 2022 presents a bright yellow hue. The nose is intense, offering ripe fruit aromas intertwined with spicy notes and hints of citrus. On the palate, it is unctuous and long, with well-integrated toasted nuances and a fine bitterness that adds complexity. The wine exhibits a harmonious balance between richness and freshness, culminating in a persistent and elegant finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This wine pairs excellently with a variety of dishes. Its richness complements creamy seafood dishes like lobster bisque or scallops in butter sauce. The vibrant acidity balances well with grilled poultry or pork tenderloin. It also pairs beautifully with aged cheeses such as Manchego or Comté, and its complexity can stand up to dishes featuring aromatic herbs or mild spices.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Belondrade y Lurton 2022 at a temperature of 12°C (54°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and texture. Use a white wine glass with a slightly wider bowl to allow the wine to breathe and express its full range of aromas. Decanting is optional but can help open up the wine if consumed in its youth.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store the wine in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 10–15°C (50–59°F). Under proper conditions, Belondrade y Lurton 2022 has the potential to age gracefully for up to 8–10 years. Over time, it will develop additional layers of complexity, with tertiary notes of honey, nuts, and dried fruits complementing its existing profile.
