Distillery Background and History

Beefeater traces its origins to the London gin scene: the Chelsea Distillery (on Cale Street) first opened around 1820, and in 1863 James Burrough purchased it for £400 to expand into gin production.  The first “Beefeater” gin was mentioned in 1876.  In 1908 the distilling operations moved to Lambeth (Hutton Road) to increase capacity; then in 1958 production shifted to Kennington in south London at Montford Place.  The brand remained in the Burrough family until 1987.  In 2005 Beefeater was acquired by Pernod Ricard, which has since invested in the brand’s global reach.

Master Distiller and Production Philosophy

Beefeater’s modern expressions are overseen by Master Distiller(s) and blending teams who aim to preserve James Burrough’s original botanical recipe and the “London Dry” style. The philosophy values clarity, botanical intensity (especially juniper), and consistency—so that the gin remains faithful to its heritage even as markets evolve.

Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)

Beefeater is produced from 100 % grain (neutral spirit) as its base.  The water and yeast used are proprietary to the distillery operations in London, though detailed public disclosure on yeast strains is rare. Botanicals are sourced globally (e.g., citrus peels, orris root, coriander, etc.).

Distillation Process

Beefeater is a London Dry Gin, meaning botanicals are macerated in neutral spirit and redistilled (no added flavor after distillation).  The classic expression uses a single-shot distillation approach in copper pot stills.

Maturation & Cask Information

As a gin, Beefeater is not aged in casks. It is bottled and sold directly after distillation and blending (if any resting is applied, it is very short and neutral).

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Pronounced juniper, citrus peel (lemon, orange), coriander, floral and root notes.

  • Palate: Crisp and botanical, juniper-forward, citrus zest, coriander spice, hints of orris root and almonds.

  • Finish: Clean, slightly dry, lingering botanical spice and citrus.

Food Pairing Suggestions

Pairs excellently with classic combos: oysters, smoked salmon, shellfish, light salads, grilled vegetables, or citrus desserts. It also complements botanical or citrus influence in cocktails.

Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware

Serve neat chilled, on the rocks, or in cocktails. Use a tulip glass or gin balloon (Copa de Balón) to capture aromatics. A classic Gin & Tonic (Beefeater + tonic, garnish with lemon peel) is a timeless serve.

Storage and Aging Potential

Once bottled, Beefeater is stable and maintains its flavor. Store upright in a cool, dark place. It will not improve with additional aging.

Grain Type & Mash Bill (if applicable)

Neutral grain spirit (of unspecified grain mix) — no detailed public mash bill.

ABV (Alcohol by Volume)

40 % ABV (80 proof) in current UK bottlings.  Historically in some markets (e.g. U.S.) it was higher (47 %) but later reduced.
