Winery Background and History
Andreas Wine Estate is a boutique winery located in the Bovlei Valley near Wellington, South Africa. The estate, encompassing 4.5 hectares of vineyards, was acquired in 2015 by a group of UK wine enthusiasts aiming to build upon its rich heritage. Since its maiden release in 2014, Andreas has consistently produced high-quality Syrah wines, earning accolades and establishing a reputation for excellence in South African viticulture.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking at Andreas is overseen by Shaun Meyeridricks, formerly of Boekenhoutskloof, who brings extensive experience and a commitment to quality. Under his guidance, the estate focuses on producing Syrah wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Bovlei Valley, employing meticulous vineyard management and winemaking techniques to ensure each vintage expresses its distinct character.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Situated in the Bovlei Valley, the vineyards benefit from a Mediterranean climate characterized by long, hot summer days and cool, wet winters. The decomposed granite and shale soils provide excellent drainage and contribute to the concentration and complexity of the grapes. The combination of climate and soil conditions creates an ideal environment for cultivating Syrah grapes with intense flavor profiles.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested in the early morning to preserve freshness, followed by hand sorting to ensure only the best fruit is used. Fermentation occurs in 2,500 and 5,000-liter tanks with regular pump-overs to extract color and flavor. Post-malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for over 18 months in French oak barrels, 20% of which are new, and then further matured in bottle for an additional year before release.
Tasting Notes
The 2020 Andreas Shiraz exhibits a deep ruby color with a slightly pink edge. The nose is expressive, offering aromas of black cherries, plums, blueberries, and subtle notes of black pepper and smoky bacon. On the palate, it is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of sour cherries, stewed prunes, and spices, complemented by medium-plus tannins and high acidity. The wine has a long, lingering finish, indicating good aging potential.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Shiraz pairs excellently with grilled meats such as sirloin steak, lamb chops, and venison. Its robust structure and spicy notes also complement hearty stews, barbecued dishes, and aged cheeses. The wine’s complexity enhances the flavors of rich, savory meals, making it a versatile companion for various cuisines.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large red wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structure. Decanting for at least 30 minutes before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its full spectrum of flavors and aromas.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2020 vintage has the structure and balance to age gracefully for 8–10 years, during which it will develop additional tertiary aromas and flavors, such as leather, tobacco, and dried fruits, enhancing its complexity and depth.
