Winery Background and History
Weingut Bründlmayer, situated in Langenlois within Austria’s Kamptal region, is a family-owned estate renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation. Established in the mid-20th century, the winery has become a benchmark for Austrian viticulture, producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. With a focus on sustainable practices, Bründlmayer cultivates a variety of grapes, including Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, and Pinot Noir, crafting wines that are both expressive and elegant.
Producer and Winemaker
The estate is helmed by Willi Bründlmayer, a visionary winemaker dedicated to showcasing the potential of Austrian wines on the global stage. Willi’s approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques, emphasizing minimal intervention to allow the vineyard’s character to shine through. His meticulous attention to detail and passion for excellence have earned Bründlmayer international acclaim, solidifying its reputation as one of Austria’s premier wineries.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Ried Käferberg vineyard, located at elevations between 310 and 345 meters, boasts calcareous, clay-rich marine deposits interspersed with sand and primary rock. This unique terroir contributes to the wine’s density and complexity. The vineyard’s southeast-facing slopes benefit from warm days and cool nights, fostering optimal ripening conditions that preserve acidity and enhance aromatic expression.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes were hand-harvested on October 24, 2022, and underwent fermentation in used (2–3 years old) 300-liter Austrian oak barrels. Post-fermentation, the wine matured in 2,500-liter casks (also 2–3 years old) to enhance texture and complexity while preserving purity and freshness. This method imparts subtle oak nuances, allowing the wine to develop structure and harmony.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg exhibits a vibrant bouquet with hints of hay flowers, yeast, and fresh pome fruit, followed by quince jelly, citrus peel, aniseed, and ginger spice. On the palate, it is super fresh and dry, medium-bodied, balanced, and densely woven with a fine-grained texture. The wine displays agility and persistence, with an enormous ageing potential.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Grüner Veltliner pairs beautifully with a range of dishes, including exotic cuisines like curry and stir-fried dishes, as well as traditional Austrian fare such as Wiener Schnitzel, roasted goose, duck, or pork. It also complements goose or duck liver with vegetables and fruit, and calf’s liver with apples and onions.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and flavor depth, serve the wine chilled at 10–12°C (50–54°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes in the glass can enhance its expressive qualities. Use white wine glasses with a narrow bowl to concentrate the aromas and enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—the 2022 Grüner Veltliner Ried Käferberg has the potential to age gracefully for 10–15 years. Over time, it will develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of honey, nuts, and dried fruit emerging. Regular monitoring is advised to enjoy the wine at its peak maturity.
