Winery Background and History

Marqués de Riscal, founded in 1858 in Rioja Alavesa, stands as one of Spain’s most respected and historically significant wineries. The Reserva represents a benchmark traditional Rioja style — made from old-vine Tempranillo, often with up to 10% Graciano, aged extensively to blend complexity and elegance. Its reputation as a cultural icon reflects generations of consistent quality and global admiration.


Producer and Wine Maker

Crafted by Marqués de Riscal’s in-house winemaking team, the Reserva exemplifies traditional Rioja execution: controlled-temperature fermentation, maximum 12-day maceration, two years in American oak (with minor French oak), and at least one year of bottle maturation prior to release. This process achieves classic Reserva balance, finesse, and aging capacity.


Vineyards and Micro Climate

Vines date from before the 1970s, rooted in clay-limestone soils of Rioja Alavesa’s cool, elevated terrain. These conditions enhance aromatic purity, acidity, and finesse in the Tempranillo grape, while Graciano contributes vibrant colour and freshness to the blend.


Vinification & Aging Methods

After fermentation and a brief maceration, the wine spends around 20–24 months maturing in American oak barrels (small portion in French oak). Before release, it rests at least one year in bottle to integrate and reveal complexity.


Tasting Notes

The wine shows an intense black-cherry hue with minimal signs of age. Aromas of licorice, cinnamon, black pepper meld with ripe, concentrated fruit and subtle oak. On the palate it is fresh and supple with polished tannins, balanced structure, and a long, lingering balsamic finish.


Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs exquisitely with cured ham, mild cheeses, poultry, red meats, roasts, casseroles (lightly spiced), and bean or pulse dishes—excellent versatility with both light and flavorful fare.


Service Methods and Temperatures

Best served between 16–18 °C to showcase its aromas and structure. A classic reservation serving temperature.
