Winery Background and History
Viña Los Vascos, located in Chile’s Colchagua Valley, is a historic estate acquired in 1988 by Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite). This acquisition marked the Rothschild family’s first venture outside France, aiming to combine Bordeaux winemaking expertise with Chile’s unique terroir. Since then, Los Vascos has been committed to producing high-quality wines that reflect both tradition and innovation, focusing on sustainable viticulture and modern winemaking techniques.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Viña Los Vascos is led by Philippe Rolet, who brings extensive experience from both Old and New World wine regions. Rolet emphasizes minimal intervention in the cellar to allow the true expression of the vineyard’s terroir. Under his guidance, the estate focuses on producing wines that are balanced, elegant, and reflective of their origin.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The Los Vascos estate spans over 640 hectares in the Colchagua Valley, characterized by a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild winters. The vineyards benefit from a cooling influence from the Pacific Ocean and the Andes Mountains, which helps maintain acidity and freshness in the grapes. The soils are predominantly clay loam with good drainage, ideal for cultivating grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Mourvèdre.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are harvested early in the morning to preserve their aromatic freshness. Upon arrival at the winery, they undergo direct pressing and are fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks to maintain their vibrant fruit character. The wine is aged in tanks to retain its purity and freshness.
Tasting Notes
Los Vascos Rosé 2021 exhibits a bright and crystal-clear pale pink color. The nose presents intense aromas of strawberry, raspberry, and sweet melon pear. On the palate, it offers a fresh and vivacious experience with a delicate structure and balanced acidity, leading to a gentle and pleasant aftertaste.
Food & Wine Pairing
This rosé pairs well with a variety of dishes, including grilled seafood, light salads, and soft cheeses. Its vibrant fruit and balanced acidity complement dishes like grilled salmon, roasted chicken with herbs, or fettuccine Alfredo. Soft cheeses such as Brie or Camembert also make excellent accompaniments.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its flavors, serve this rosé chilled at 8–10°C (46–50°F) in a white wine glass. This temperature range enhances the wine’s crispness and allows its fruit aromas to shine. No decanting is necessary; simply open and enjoy.
Storage and Aging Potential
While this wine is ready to drink now, it can be cellared for up to 2–3 years under proper conditions. Store in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and humidity to allow the wine to maintain its freshness over time.
