Winery Background and History
De Bortoli Wines, established in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, is a family-owned winery renowned for its commitment to quality and innovation. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s dedication to sustainable viticulture and winemaking practices.
Producer and Winemaker
The Jean Pierre Brut NV is crafted by De Bortoli Wines, with Chief Winemaker Steve Webber at the helm. Webber’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the grapes to shine through in the final product. His meticulous approach ensures that each vintage maintains its renowned quality and character, reflecting the winery’s commitment to excellence.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for this wine are sourced from select vineyards in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The region’s warm days and cool nights provide ideal conditions for growing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, allowing them to develop full flavors while retaining natural acidity. The vineyards are managed with a focus on sustainability, ensuring the health of the vines and the quality of the fruit.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The select Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards are picked in the cool of the night to be quickly pressed to tank. Primary fermentation is warm and quick to ensure the purity and freshness of the fruit. A secondary fermentation is then undertaken in tank, allowing the wine to rest and develop complexity. A harmony is found in this blend as reserve wines are blended back to continue the house style.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw appearance with an unrelenting fine bubble. Aromas of fresh lemon pith with complex notes of brioche and barley sugar. A voluminous mousse of citrus reveals a palate of freshly iced pastries that goes on and on to a delicately fresh, fine acid finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This sparkling wine pairs well with a variety of dishes, including natural oysters with a squeeze of lemon and a pinch of black pepper. Its vibrant acidity and fine bubbles also complement dishes like grilled seafood, light salads, and soft cheeses. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate the nuances of this sparkling wine, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 6–8°C (43–46°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl to concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet and flavors. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, acidity, and effervescence to shine through with elegance and balance.
Storage and Aging Potential
The Jean Pierre Brut NV is crafted for immediate enjoyment. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness for up to 2 years. However, it is recommended to consume it young to fully appreciate its vibrant fruit flavors and lively effervescence.
