Winery Background and History

Gnarly Head Wines, established in 2004, is a California-based winery renowned for producing bold and expressive wines. The brand’s name and ethos are inspired by the gnarled, head-trained vines of Lodi, some of which are over 80 years old. These ancient vines yield small, intensely flavored grapes, resulting in wines with concentrated character. Gnarly Head is a part of the Delicato Family Wines portfolio, a family-owned company with a legacy dating back to 1924.

Producer and Winemaker

The winemaking team at Gnarly Head is led by Scott Jones, who brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of Lodi’s unique terroir. Jones and his team focus on crafting wines that reflect the robust character of the old vines, employing sustainable farming practices and meticulous winemaking techniques. Their approach emphasizes the natural intensity of the fruit, resulting in wines that are both powerful and balanced.

Vineyards and Microclimate

The grapes for the Old Vine Zinfandel are sourced from select vineyards in Lodi, California, known for their sandy soils and Mediterranean climate. The region’s warm days and cool nights, influenced by the Sacramento Delta breezes, allow for optimal ripening while preserving acidity. The old vines, aged between 35 to 80 years, are head-trained and spur-pruned, producing low yields of small, concentrated berries that contribute to the wine’s depth and complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Harvested during the cool early morning hours, the grapes are destemmed and gently pressed. Fermentation occurs in stainless steel tanks over 7 to 9 days, maintaining the fruit’s vibrant character. Post-fermentation, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged in a combination of French and American oak barrels. This aging process imparts additional layers of spice and vanilla, enhancing the wine’s overall complexity.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Gnarly Head Old Vine Zinfandel exhibits a deep ruby hue with purple highlights. On the nose, it offers rich aromas of blackberry bramble, juicy plum, and toasted oak. The palate is medium-bodied, showcasing flavors of jammy blackberries, mocha, and layers of spice and vanilla. Balanced acidity and supple tannins lead to a lingering, spicy finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Zinfandel pairs excellently with hearty dishes such as braised short ribs, grilled sausages, or barbecued pork ribs. Its bold fruit flavors and spicy undertones complement spicy cuisines, including chili con carne and chicken enchiladas. For a delightful contrast, try pairing it with dark chocolate desserts.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve this wine at a temperature of 15–18°C (59–64°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic profile and flavor complexity. Decanting for 30 minutes before serving can help open up the wine, enhancing its bouquet and softening the tannins. Use large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and direct the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate.

Storage and Aging Potential

While this Zinfandel is crafted for immediate enjoyment, it can be cellared for up to 5 years under proper conditions. Store the bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature and moderate humidity. Over time, the wine may develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of dried fruit and subtle earthy nuances.
