Winery Background and History

Tenuta di Castiglioni is the oldest Frescobaldi estate, its history stretching back to the 11th century and vineyards cultivated since the 1300s. Nestled in the gentle hills of Val di Pesa, its wine heritage extends to papal and royal appreciation, including at the court of Henry VIII. This wine embodies centuries of Tuscan winemaking tradition.

Crafted by the Frescobaldi winemaking team, the 2022 vintage leverages their deep-rooted expertise. The estate continues to blend tradition with modern precision, ensuring consistency and elegance in output. 

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The estate is situated in Val di Pesa, where clay-rich soils, gentle elevation, and afternoon breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea create ideal conditions for ripening. The terroir blends freshness and structure into the wine. 

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes were destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with light, constant pumpovers. After alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation followed. The wine aged for 12 months in barriques, plus 2 additional months in bottle before release. 

Tasting Notes

The 2022 vintage presents a vibrant ruby-red with purple highlights. Aromas are intense and layered—blackberry, black cherry, blueberry, currant, cinnamon, star anise, black pepper, and cocoa notes emerge over a soft, enveloping palate with velvety tannins and a lingering spicy finish. 

Food & Wine Pairing

This warm, rounded wine pairs beautifully with hearty Tuscan fare—think roasted meats, game, ragù-rich pastas, and aged cheeses—enhancing its plush fruit and spice character. 

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 16–18 °C in a generous red wine glass. A brief decant (20–30 minutes) allows the wine’s aromas to blossom and tannin structure to soften gracefully. 

Storage and Aging Potential

While enjoyable now, this Riserva will evolve gracefully over 5–10 years, gaining complexity and tertiary depth paired with its silky base.
