Winery Background and History
Maison E. Guigal was founded in 1946 in Ampuis, in the Northern Rhône Valley of France. Originally a négociant firm, Guigal expanded across the Rhône, acquiring top vineyards and perfecting winemaking techniques. While their fame is rooted in prestigious northern Rhône wines—Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu—their forays into southern Rhône including Châteauneuf-du-Pape reflect a dedication to quality and terroir expression beyond their home region. Guigal’s southern range wines benefit from the same philosophy of balance between power and elegance that defines their flagship northern wines
Producer and Wine Maker
This wine is crafted by Philippe Guigal and his team, who select fruit from old vines throughout Châteauneuf-du-Pape, blending Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre and other permitted local varieties. They supervise everything—from vineyard selection through harvest, vinification, and long maturation—to maintain consistency and expressiveness. Their southern Rhône work emphasizes ripeness, round tannins, and savory complexity, while ensuring wines are built for both immediate impact and longevity
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Fruit is sourced from old vines (≈ 50 years) planted in classic Châteauneuf-du-Pape soils—galets roulés (rounded river stones), red clay, and alluvial deposits. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate: hot, dry summers, mild winters, with cooling nights and mistral winds. In 2020, conditions were warm and dry, yielding concentrated and ripe fruit, though harvest timing and site selection helped retain freshness and avoid over-ripeness
Vinification & Aging Methods
After harvest, grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation with maceration of nearly three weeks to extract color, flavor, and tannin. The wine is then aged in large oak foudres for about three years, followed by extended bottle aging before release. The oak provides structure and spice without dominating fruit, allowing complexity and integration over time
Tasting notes
Deep garnet color. Aromas show rich dark fruits—burnt plum, black cherry—mixed with garrigue, pepper, and spice. Palate is full and dense, with layers of ripe Grenache sweetness tempered by Syrah and Mourvèdre’s structure. Tannins are round and polished though substantial, acidity balanced, finishing with savory and nutty undertones and lingering spice
Food & Wine Pairing
Pairs well with hearty dishes: roast lamb with herbs, duck with fruit reductions, game meats, and grilled beef. Also excellent with Provençal cuisine—ratatouille, roasted pepper, olive oil—where the wine’s spice and herbal character complement such flavors. Strong cheeses and charcuterie also work well
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 17-18 °C. Decant for 1-2 hours to allow the wine to open and tannins to soften. Use a large red wine glass to better appreciate aromatic complexity. Once opened, enjoy over a few hours; re-cork and store upright to preserve character
Storage and Aging Potential
2020 is built for aging. Peak development should begin around 2026 and extend into the mid-2030s with proper storage (cool, ~12-14 °C, stable humidity, dark, lying bottles). Over time expect secondary and tertiary aromas of leather, earth, dried herbs, and toasted spice to emerge while fruit remains balanced
