Distillery Background and History
Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whisky brand produced by Chivas Brothers (a Pernod Ricard company). The brand began in the early 20th century and over time introduced multiple variants and limited editions. “Mizunara” is one of Chivas Regal’s more recent efforts, marrying Scotch whisky tradition with Japanese oak finishing.
Master Distiller and Production Philosophy
Under master blender Sandy Hyslop, Chivas crafts Mizunara by selectively finishing part of its blend in Mizunara oak casks. The philosophy is to bring subtle aromatic complexity—floral, spice, wood character—from the rare Japanese oak without overwhelming the Scotch house style.
Source of Ingredients (Grain, Water, Yeast)
As a blended Scotch, Chivas Regal Mizunara comprises malt whiskies and grain whiskies from various Scottish distilleries. These components use malted barley (for the malt portion) and typical Scotch grain sources. Water and yeast sources are those standard to the conurbations of Chivas / Chivas Brothers blended production.
Distillation Process
Malt components originate from copper pot still distillation at their respective distilleries, while grain components come from column stills. After maturation and blending, the blend is finished in Mizunara casks for the aromatic overlay.
Maturation & Cask Information
The whisky is matured in standard Scotch casks (bourbon, ex-oak, etc.), then a portion of the blended whisky is finished in Japanese Mizunara oak casks. Mizunara oak is rare, porous, and imparts distinctive aromatic notes (spice, sandalwood, incense).
Tasting Notes
Nose: Rich and fruity, with pear and orange perfume over hints of floral spice courtesy of the Mizunara finish.
Palate: Smooth, rich, with honeyed sweetness, hazelnut and delicate wood spice. The Mizunara influence brings a whisper of aromatic spice.
Finish: Distinctive and slightly spicy, with lingering wood and a soft warmth.
Food & Wine Pairing Suggestions
Pairs well with mild cheeses, grilled seafood or shellfish, light poultry, fruit tarts (pear, apple), and desserts that emphasize almond, honey, or gentle spice.
Serving Suggestions and Ideal Glassware
Serve neat or with a few drops of water to unlock aromatics. Use a Glencairn or tulip whisky glass to concentrate aromas. Ideal drinking temperature ~16–18 °C (slightly below room).
Storage and Aging Potential
Once bottled, it is fully matured and stable; not intended for further wood aging. Store upright in a cool, dark, steady environment (~15–20 °C). After opening, consume within 1–2 years to maintain aromatics.
