Winery Background and History
Maison Chanson, founded in 1750, has a long history as a Burgundian négociant and domaine, combining vineyard acquisitions with négociant trade. In Burgundy, Chanson Père et Fils manages their estate holdings, restoring older vines, modernizing cellar techniques, and blending terroir fidelity with stylistic consistency. Their Côte de Nuits wines—including from Gevrey-Chambertin—reflect this balance of traditional Burgundian craftsmanship and modern precision in each vintage.
Producer and Wine Maker
Chanson Père & Fils is responsible for this wine. The winemaking team sources grapes from the La Perrière climat, directs harvest decisions, sorting, fermentation (often with significant whole clusters), and then oversees barrel aging. They aim for finesse—measured extraction and oak integration so that the vineyard expression remains central.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
La Perrière is a Premier Cru climat in Gevrey-Chambertin, located just north of the village, with mid-slope position. The soils are classic Côte de Nuits mix of limestone, clay and gravel, providing drainage and minerality. The microclimate sees warm days and cool nights, allowing slow ripening. Exposure and air circulation reduce disease risk and preserve both aromatics and structure in the berries.
Vinification & Aging Methods
In 2018, vinification was notable: Chanson used 100 % whole clusters (except in some hail-damaged exceptions). Fermentation occurred in small vats under temperature control, with moderate cap work to extract without harshness. Malolactic fermentation followed, often in barrels. The wine was matured about 14–18 months in French oak barrels (a mix of new and used) to harmonize structure, wood, and fruit.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby red. Aromas of peony, black cherry, wild plum, violet, subtle spice and a trace of chocolate. On the palate: concentrated yet elegant, with fine tannins, a silky texture, juicy red and dark fruit, a mineral backbone, and a long finish with spice lingering.
Food & Wine Pairing
Excellent with duck breast, game birds (partridge, pigeon), herb-crusted lamb, mushroom dishes, beef bourguignon, and aged soft cheeses (Époisses, Comté). Also pairs with dishes featuring earthy herbs or truffles.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at about 16-18 °C. Use a Burgundy or large Pinot Noir glass. Decant for 30 minutes or more if the wine seems tight. Pour gently to avoid disturbing sediment, if present.
Storage and Aging Potential
With proper cellar conditions (12-14 °C, stable humidity, darkness), this wine will evolve over 10 to 20 years. Over time, it should gain tertiary notes like forest floor, leather, dried herbs, and sous-bois, while retaining finesse and freshness.
