Winery Background and History
Maison Chanson was founded in 1750 in Burgundy and has long been active both as négociant and domaine. Over its history, Chanson has acquired and managed vineyards across the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, combining négociant sourcing with estate holdings. As part of the Rothschild heritage portfolio, Chanson invests in vineyard renewal and emphasizes terroir expression, while preserving Burgundian tradition.
Producer and Wine Maker
The producer is Chanson Père et Fils (a Burgundy arm of Maison Chanson). The winemaking team sources fruit from the Les Combottes vineyard, oversees sorting, fermentation, and barrel maturation. Their aim is to let the terroir speak: gentle extraction, balanced oak use, and careful integration guide their stylistic decisions.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Les Combottes is a 1er Cru climat in Chambolle-Musigny, east to southeast facing, on clay and limestone soils typical of Côte de Nuits. It benefits from sunlight exposure on mid-slopes and good drainage. The Burgundy climate—cool, with significant diurnal swings and moderated by its proximity to forests—supports gradual ripening and aromatic finesse. The vineyard parcels classified as Les Combottes cover about 82–92 ares.
Vinification & Aging Methods
After hand harvest and sorting, the grapes undergo controlled fermentation (likely in stainless or small vats) with moderate cap management to balance extraction. Malolactic fermentation follows in barrel or tank. The wine is matured for about 14–18 months in French oak barrels (a portion new, remainder in used barrels) to support structure without overwhelming fruit.
Tasting notes
Bright ruby in the glass. On the nose, floral aromas of violet and rose mingle with red cherry, wild berry and subtle spice notes. On the palate, it is elegant and refined: delicate red fruits, a silky texture, gentle tannins, fresh acidity, and a lingering finish with touches of mineral and light oak.
Food & Wine Pairing
Excellent with roast duck, game birds, grilled pork, mushroom dishes, and herb-infused sauces. Also matches soft cheeses, mushroom risotto or poultry in light sauces.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at about 15–17 °C. Use a medium-large Burgundy glass to allow aromas to unfold. Decant for 20–30 minutes or more if the wine is closed or has been aged.
Storage and Aging Potential
Under proper cellaring (12–14 °C, stable humidity, darkness), this 1er Cru Pinot can age gracefully for 8 to 15 years, developing tertiary notes like forest floor, dried fruit, and truffle, while retaining freshness.
