Winery Background and History
Casanova di Neri was founded in 1971 by Giovanni Neri in Montalcino. Over five decades, the estate has grown into a leader of modern Tuscan winemaking with several distinguished single-vineyard bottlings. Pietradonice is named after the vineyard’s unique onyx-rich soils (“pietra” = stone, “donice” = onyx), symbolizing both terroir and identity.
Producer and Winemaker
Currently guided by Giovanni’s sons, Giacomo and his family, the estate emphasizes exacting vineyard management and minimalist, expressive winemaking techniques. Their craftsmanship shines in focused bottlings like Pietradonice.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes come from the Pietradonice vineyard—located in Castelnuovo dell’Abate near Montalcino—planted on decomposed onyx soils. These southeast-facing slopes benefit from a unique microclimate that imbues the Cabernet Sauvignon with both power and elegance.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested by hand, grapes undergo double sorting (manual and optical). Fermentation occurs in conical steel vats for around 15–18 days with spontaneous yeasts and frequent punch-downs. The wine is aged for 18 months in small oak barrels.
Tasting notes
Deep red in color, the nose bursts with dark berries, mint, licorice, and mineral undertones. The palate is rich and concentrated, with elegant, velvety tannins and refined structure. A sweet, lingering finish balances power and finesse.
Food & Wine Pairing
Outstanding with game dishes, grilled meats, and mature cheeses—its structure and depth match bold flavors beautifully.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Best served at 18–20 °C in a large Bordeaux-style glass. Decanting for about 1 hour enhances aromatic expression and texture.
Storage and Aging Potential
This wine boasts long aging potential—drinkable now but will evolve gracefully over 15–25 years thanks to its power and structured profile.
Grape Varietals & percentage used
100% Cabernet Sauvignon, demonstrating Cabernet’s elegance through this specific terroir.
ABV (Alcohol by Volume)
15.0%—a robust level that contributes to the wine’s concentration and longevity.
