Winery Background and History
Founded in 1978 by the Mariani family, Banfi is a renowned Italian winery with estates in both Tuscany and Piedmont. While initially celebrated for its Brunello di Montalcino, Banfi expanded its vision to Piedmont in the early 1990s, aiming to revive the region’s sparkling wine tradition. Collaborating with other producers, Banfi played a pivotal role in establishing the Alta Langa DOCG in 2008. The Cuvée Aurora line, introduced in 1997, embodies Banfi’s commitment to quality and innovation in Metodo Classico sparkling wines.
Producer and Winemaker
Banfi’s winemaking philosophy combines tradition with modern techniques. The production of Aska Bolgheri Rosso is overseen by a dedicated team in Tuscany, focusing on meticulous grape selection and adherence to temperature-controlled fermentation processes. The winery emphasizes sustainability and precision in both vineyard management and cellar practices to produce elegant and expressive red wines.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for Aska Bolgheri Rosso are sourced from vineyards in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany. This area benefits from a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm days and cool nights, which enhances the aromatic profile and acidity of the grapes. The soils are predominantly sandy with a strong presence of friable rock, providing excellent drainage and contributing to the wine’s minerality and freshness.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Harvested manually in early September, the grapes undergo a soft pressing followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks at 13–15°C. The wine is then aged on the lees in stainless-steel tanks for approximately 2 months to enhance its complexity and mouthfeel. This method preserves the varietal’s freshness and aromatic intensity.
Tasting Notes
Aska Bolgheri Rosso 2021 presents a deep ruby red color with violet reflections. The bouquet is intense and fragrant, featuring notes of red berries, blueberries, and plum jam, accompanied by hints of tobacco and licorice. On the palate, the wine is well-rounded and full-bodied, balanced by a refreshing acidity. The finish is persistent and fruity, leaving a lasting impression of freshness and elegance.
Food & Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including red meats, game, and hard cheeses. Its robust structure and aromatic profile complement grilled meats, rich pasta dishes, and aged cheeses. It also serves as an excellent companion to hearty stews and roasted vegetables.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve Aska Bolgheri Rosso 2021 at a temperature of 16–18°C (60–64°F) to accentuate its vibrant acidity and aromatic profile. Use large-sized red wine glasses to concentrate the aromas and deliver the wine to the appropriate areas of the palate. Decanting for about 30 minutes before serving can enhance its expressive qualities.
Storage and Aging Potential
While designed for immediate enjoyment, this wine can be stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent humidity—for up to 5–7 years. Over time, it may develop additional complexity, with tertiary notes of leather and dried fruits emerging. Regular monitoring is advised to enjoy the wine at its peak freshness.
