Winery Background and History

“La Poja” was established in 1979 by Giovanni Allegrini on a limestone plateau above La Grola in Valpolicella—a pioneering single-vineyard initiative in the region. Since then, it has become an icon of terroir expression and one of the most celebrated wines from Allegrini. 

Producer and Winemaker

Allegrini’s family-run estate is led today by Franco Allegrini, who continues their legacy through precise viticulture, microclimate-focused farming, and elegant, terroir-driven winemaking. La Poja reflects their commitment to clarity, purity, and depth. 

Vineyards and Micro-Climate

The La Poja vineyard spans just 2.6–3 hectares on a flat, southeast-facing limestone plateau at ~320 m altitude, featuring white calcareous soils that retain sunlight for optimal ripeness and concentration. 

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested late in October. Fermentation is conducted with gentle pumping over in temperature-controlled stainless steel. The wine is aged for 20 months in new French (Allier) barriques, followed by an additional 8 months in large Slavonian oak barrels, then 10 months in bottle before release. 

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby in color, it presents blackberry, black cherry, violet, spice, cedar, and forest floor, layered with refined structure and chalky minerality. The palate is full-bodied, elegant, and dynamic. 

Food & Wine Pairing

Pairs beautifully with truffle risotto, roasted game, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, duck with cherry reduction, and rich red meats—its structure and finesse match richly flavored cuisine. 

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve in a large Bordeaux glass at 18–20 °C. No decanting is strictly necessary, but a short rest can enhance aromatic expression. 

Storage and Aging Potential

Outstanding aging potential—enjoyable now for its richness; will evolve harmoniously and remain vibrant for 20+ years.
