Winery Background and History
Established in 1849 by Samuel Smith, Yalumba is Australia’s oldest family-owned winery. Over six generations, the Hill-Smith family has maintained a legacy of innovation and sustainability, crafting wines that reflect the diverse terroirs of South Australia. The name “Yalumba” is derived from the Aboriginal word meaning “all the land around,” signifying its deep connection to the region.
Producer and Winemaker
Yalumba remains under the stewardship of the Hill-Smith family, with Robert Hill-Smith leading as the fifth-generation chairman. The chief winemaker, Louisa Rose, joined Yalumba in 1992 and has been instrumental in shaping the winery’s distinctive style. Renowned for her expertise, particularly with Viognier, Louisa ensures that each wine embodies Yalumba’s commitment to quality and regional expression.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Eden Valley, part of the Barossa region, is characterized by its higher altitude and cooler climate compared to the neighboring Barossa Valley. This elevation provides a unique microclimate ideal for cultivating Roussanne. The vineyards benefit from well-drained soils and a long ripening season, allowing the grapes to develop complex flavors while retaining natural acidity.
Grape Varietals & Percentage Used
100% Roussanne
Vinification & Aging Methods
The Roussanne grapes are handpicked to ensure optimal quality. After gentle pressing, the juice undergoes fermentation in a combination of stainless steel tanks and seasoned French oak barrels. This approach preserves the varietal’s fresh fruit characteristics while adding subtle complexity. The wine is then aged on its lees for several months, enhancing texture and mouthfeel before bottling.

Tasting Notes
This Roussanne showcases aromas of ripe red and yellow apples, complemented by hints of just-ripe nectarine. On the palate, it offers a fleshy and expansive texture, with flavors mirroring the aromatic profile. The wine’s richness is balanced by a refreshing acidity, leading to a clean and satisfying finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
The versatility of this Roussanne makes it an excellent companion to a variety of dishes. It pairs well with roasted poultry, particularly duck or chicken with herb-infused sauces. Seafood dishes like seared scallops or grilled prawns also complement its flavor profile. For vegetarian options, consider dishes featuring creamy sauces or roasted root vegetables.
Service Methods and Temperatures
To fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and textural nuances, serve this Roussanne chilled at 10-12°C (50-54°F). Decanting is not necessary; however, allowing the wine a few minutes in the glass can help it open up and reveal its layers. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will enhance the tasting experience.
Storage and Aging Potential
While this wine is enjoyable in its youth, it also has the potential to develop further complexity with short-term cellaring. Over the next 3-5 years, expect the emergence of richer, honeyed notes and a more rounded mouthfeel. Store bottles in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature to ensure optimal aging.
