Winery Background and History

Established in 1928 by Italian immigrant Vittorio De Bortoli, De Bortoli Wines has grown into one of Australia’s most esteemed family-owned wineries. Initially rooted in the Riverina region of New South Wales, the winery expanded into the Yarra Valley in 1987, acquiring an existing vineyard and winery. The Yarra Valley Estate, managed by Leanne De Bortoli and her husband, winemaker Steve Webber, has become renowned for producing premium cool-climate wines, reflecting the family’s commitment to quality, innovation, and sustainability.

Producer and Winemaker

The 2023 Vivo Moscato was crafted under the guidance of Chief Winemaker Steve Webber, who brings extensive experience and a passion for producing premium wines. Webber’s meticulous approach ensures that each vintage maintains its renowned quality and character. His philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, allowing the unique characteristics of the Moscato grapes to shine through in the final product.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The grapes for this wine are sourced from the Riverina region in New South Wales, known for its diverse microclimates and fertile soils. The 2023 growing season featured average rains during winter and early spring, benefiting vine health and fruitfulness. A mild growing season with no prolonged heatwaves provided perfect ripening conditions, allowing the fruit to retain good varietal characteristics and to be harvested at optimal ripeness and flavor.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The fruit was hand-picked and sorted to open fermenters. A combination of whole berries and whole bunches was used. Fermentation occurred with ambient yeast, and a mixture of hand plunging and gentle turnovers was employed. The wine underwent 15–20 days of maceration, then was pressed and racked to new and used French oak barriques for 7 months of maturation.

Tasting Notes

The 2023 Vivo Moscato exhibits a pale straw color with a lively green tinge. The nose displays freshly crushed grapes, with a little musk and a hint of lime juice. The palate is lively and fresh as one would expect from a frizzante style wine. The palate tastes of freshly crushed grapes with just a squeeze of lemon & ginger on the finish.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Moscato pairs well with a variety of dishes, including spicy Asian cuisine, fresh fruit salads, and light desserts like lemon tart. Its vibrant acidity and subtle sweetness also complement dishes like grilled seafood, soft cheeses, and charcuterie. The wine’s balance and complexity make it a versatile companion to both simple and elaborate meals.

Service Methods and Temperatures

To fully appreciate the nuances of this Moscato, serve it well-chilled at a temperature between 6–8°C (43–46°F). Use white wine glasses with a slightly narrower bowl to concentrate the aromas. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet and flavors. Proper serving enhances the wine’s complexity, allowing its layers of fruit, acidity, and sweetness to shine through with elegance and balance.

Storage and Aging Potential

The 2023 Vivo Moscato is crafted for immediate enjoyment. Stored under optimal conditions—cool, dark, and with consistent temperature and humidity—the wine will maintain its freshness for up to 2 years. However, it is recommended to consume it young to fully appreciate its vibrant fruit flavors and lively effervescence.
