Winery Background and History
Vincent Girardin, born into a winemaking family in Santenay, Burgundy, established his own domaine in 1982 at the age of 19. Over the years, he gained recognition for producing high-quality wines that reflect the terroir of the Côte de Beaune. In 2012, the domaine was sold to a long-standing partner, ensuring the continuation of Girardin’s philosophy and commitment to excellence. Today, the estate is known for its sustainable practices and elegant expressions of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Producer and Winemaker
The winemaking team at Domaine Vincent Girardin is dedicated to producing wines that showcase the purity and complexity of Burgundy’s terroirs. They employ sustainable and biodynamic practices in the vineyard and minimal intervention in the cellar. The focus is on expressing the character of each vineyard site, resulting in wines that are both expressive and refined.
Vineyards and Microclimate
The Meursault Vieilles Vignes cuvée is sourced from 50-year-old Chardonnay vines planted in limestone-rich soils. The vineyards benefit from a temperate continental climate, with warm summers and cool nights that promote slow, even ripening. This combination of old vines, mineral-rich soils, and favorable climate contributes to the wine’s depth, complexity, and distinctive minerality.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed to extract the juice. Fermentation occurs in French oak barrels, with 15% new oak, using indigenous yeasts. The wine undergoes both alcoholic and malolactic fermentation and is aged on fine lees for 15 months. Prior to bottling, the wine is blended and lightly filtered, following the lunar calendar to respect natural rhythms.
Tasting Notes
The 2022 Meursault Vieilles Vignes presents a heady bouquet of dried almond, butter, and mineral notes. Upon opening, it reveals fine aromas of white flowers, butter, and toasted bread. The palate is rich and full-bodied, with flavors of hazelnut, citrus fruits, and a touch of honey. Its mineral structure brings purity and freshness, leading to a long, structured finish.
Food & Wine Pairing
This elegant Meursault pairs beautifully with dishes such as roasted poultry, grilled lobster, or creamy mushroom risotto. Its richness complements buttery sauces and aged cheeses like Comté or Brie. The wine’s acidity and minerality also make it a fine match for dishes featuring citrus or herbal elements.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 10°C to 12°C (50°F to 54°F) in a Burgundy glass to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity. Decanting for 30 minutes is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its nuanced flavors. This preparation enhances the tasting experience, highlighting the wine’s elegance and depth.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2022 vintage, while approachable in its youth, possesses the structure and balance to age gracefully over the next 5 to 10 years. With time, the wine will develop additional complexity, revealing tertiary notes of dried fruit, nuts, and honey.
