Winery Background and History

Established in 1864 by Don Eloy Lecanda y Chaves, Vega Sicilia is Spain’s most iconic winery, situated in the Ribera del Duero region. The estate gained international acclaim for its meticulous winemaking and extended aging processes, producing wines of exceptional quality and longevity. Since 1982, under the ownership of the Álvarez family, Vega Sicilia has continued to uphold its legacy, blending tradition with innovation to craft wines that embody elegance, complexity, and timelessness.

Producer and Wine Maker

The Álvarez family, proprietors since 1982, have been instrumental in maintaining Vega Sicilia’s esteemed reputation. Technical Director Gonzalo Iturriaga oversees the winemaking process, ensuring that each vintage reflects the unique terroir of the estate. Their commitment to excellence is evident in the meticulous vineyard management and the winery’s philosophy of patience, often aging wines for over a decade before release.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

Vega Sicilia’s vineyards span approximately 210 hectares, with the Único sourced from the finest 40 hectares. Situated at altitudes between 700 and 900 meters, the vineyards benefit from a continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. The diverse soils, comprising limestone, marl, and clay, contribute to the wine’s complexity and structure. The 2013 vintage faced a challenging, rainy harvest, necessitating careful vineyard management to maintain grape quality.

Vinification & Aging Methods

The 2013 Único is a blend of 97% Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation occurred in wooden vats using native yeasts, followed by malolactic fermentation in wood. The wine underwent an extensive aging process of approximately 10 years, including time in 225-liter French and American oak barrels and 22,000-liter oak vats. This prolonged maturation allows the wine to develop its signature depth, complexity, and elegance.

Tasting notes

The 2013 Único presents a polished and complex nose of poached plums, dark cherries, tea leaves, graphite, milk chocolate, and a touch of caramel. On the palate, it is medium-to full-bodied with firm yet creamy tannins, offering a caressing, seductive, and ripe profile with underlying freshness. The wine is subtle, elegant, fresh, complex, silky, and well-defined, showcasing the finesse and balance characteristic of Vega Sicilia’s flagship wine.

Food & Wine Pairing

This wine pairs excellently with rich dishes such as roasted lamb, venison, and aged cheeses. Its robust structure and intricate flavors also complement earthy mushroom risottos and grilled meats, enhancing the dining experience.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve at 18°C (64°F). Decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its aromatic complexity. Use large Bordeaux glasses to fully appreciate its bouquet and texture.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2013 vintage has excellent aging potential, expected to evolve gracefully over the next 20 to 30 years, developing greater complexity and depth with time.
