Winery Background and History
Twinwoods Estate was founded in 2005 by winemaker Aldo Bratovic and Gavin Jones (Jebsen Fine Wines) in the Wilyabrup sub-region of Margaret River, Western Australia. Though a young estate, it quickly gained acclaim for its terroir-driven wines. Blending Old World finesse with New World vibrancy, Twinwoods has established a reputation as a rising star in Margaret River, crafting elegant, expressive wines from estate-grown fruit.
Producer and Wine Maker
This Shiraz is produced by Twinwoods’ on-site winemaking team, led by Aldo Bratovic. The approach emphasizes minimal intervention, respectful handling of fruit, and precise vineyard selection. The team’s philosophy focuses on crafting wines that balance regional expression with structure, aiming for Shiraz that is refined, aromatic, and true to Margaret River’s unique climate.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Grapes for this Shiraz come from Twinwoods’ estate in Wilyabrup, about 30 km north of Margaret River township. The region’s maritime climate—marked by cooling sea breezes, moderate diurnal shifts, and low summer heat—supports elegant ripening and natural acidity. The soils are gravelly loam over clay, providing excellent drainage and balanced vine vigor, resulting in Shiraz with refined fruit, spice, and structure.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Fermentation is traditionally managed in small batches to retain varietal intensity, followed by maturation in French oak barrels—though the proportion of new vs. neutral oak is not publicized. The goal is to achieve structural depth and complexity while preserving expressive fruit. Time in oak adds gentle spice and refined textures without overwhelming the wine’s delicate balance.
Tasting Notes
In the glass, the wine displays a deep ruby hue with bright crimson edges. Aromas reveal dark cherry, plum, black pepper, and sweet spice. On the palate, it is medium-bodied with silky tannins and vibrant acidity. Flavors of boysenberry, dark chocolate, licorice, and subtle oak spice are layered and balanced. The finish is long, elegant, and nuanced, showcasing Margaret River’s cool-climate variation of Shiraz.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Shiraz pairs wonderfully with dishes like grilled lamb, beef medallions, spicy sausages, and hearty stews. It complements Middle Eastern spice blends, rich mushroom dishes, and aged hard cheeses. The wine’s balanced fruit, fine tannin, and spice complexity make it versatile with both savory and slightly spicy cuisine.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve at 16–18 °C in a wide-bowled red wine glass. A brief decant of 20–30 minutes is recommended to ease tannins and unlock aromatics. Let it warm slightly in the glass to fully appreciate its layered spice and fruit nuances.
Storage and Aging Potential
This is a medium-term aging wine. Under proper cellaring (cool, stable conditions), it can evolve gracefully for 5–7 years. Over time, tannins will soften and tertiary notes like earth, spice, and savory complexity will emerge.
