Winery Background and History
Tenuta Mara is a biodynamic estate located in San Clemente, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Founded by Giordano Emendatori in 2000, the estate spans 35 hectares, with 11 hectares dedicated exclusively to Sangiovese vines. The winery integrates art, music, and nature, playing classical music in the vineyards and cellar, reflecting a holistic approach to viticulture. Tenuta Mara is certified biodynamic by Demeter, emphasizing sustainable practices and a deep respect for the environment.
Producer and Winemaker
Giordano Emendatori, the visionary behind Tenuta Mara, leads the estate with a commitment to biodynamic principles. The winemaking team focuses on minimal intervention, allowing the natural expression of the Sangiovese grape. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are unfiltered and unfined, preserving their authenticity and character.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The vineyards are situated in the hills of San Clemente, benefiting from a favorable microclimate influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. The soils are predominantly clay-limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. The combination of altitude, sun exposure, and sea breezes contributes to the development of grapes with balanced acidity and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
Grapes are hand-harvested in early October and undergo manual selection. Fermentation occurs in truncated conical oak vats without temperature control, using only indigenous yeasts. The must remains in maceration on the skins for about a month. The wine then ages on its fine lees for 16 months in French oak barrels and tonneaux, followed by additional bottle aging to enhance complexity and integration.
Tasting Notes
The 2019 MaraMia exhibits a bright ruby red color. The nose offers a bouquet of violet, red currant, plum, and cinnamon. On the palate, it is clean and fresh, with good acidity and persistence. The wine showcases a surprising balance and a pleasant balsamic note, reflecting its biodynamic origins.
Food & Wine Pairing
MaraMia pairs excellently with traditional Italian dishes such as lamb chops, risotto, and aged cheeses. Its structure and acidity make it a suitable companion for rich and savory dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large red wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic profile. Decanting for at least one hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its complexity.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2019 MaraMia has the potential to age gracefully for 8–10 years, developing additional tertiary aromas and flavors over time.
