Winery Background and History
Tenuta Mara is a biodynamic estate established in 2000 by Giordano Emendatori in San Clemente, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. The estate spans seven hectares, exclusively planted with Sangiovese vines. Emendatori’s vision was to create a holistic environment where viticulture, art, and music coexist. The vineyards are cultivated following biodynamic principles, and classical music is played among the vines and in the cellar, reflecting the belief that music positively influences plant growth and wine maturation.
Producer and Winemaker
Giordano Emendatori, the founder of Tenuta Mara, leads the estate with a passion for biodynamic agriculture and sustainable practices. The winemaking team embraces a non-interventionist philosophy, allowing the natural expression of the Sangiovese grape. Fermentation occurs spontaneously with indigenous yeasts, and the wines are unfiltered and unfined, preserving their authenticity and character.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
Located in the hills of San Clemente, the vineyards benefit from a favorable microclimate influenced by the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine Mountains. The soils are rich in clay and limestone, providing excellent drainage and mineral content. The combination of altitude, sun exposure, and sea breezes contributes to the development of grapes with balanced acidity and aromatic complexity.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2017 MaraMia is produced from hand-harvested Sangiovese grapes. Fermentation occurs spontaneously in truncated conical oak vats without temperature control. The wine undergoes a prolonged maceration on the skins for about 30 days. Aging takes place for 16 months in French oak barrels and tonneaux, followed by additional bottle aging to enhance complexity and integration.
Tasting Notes
The wine exhibits a medium-intensity ruby red color with garnet reflections. On the nose, it offers a bouquet of ripe red fruits, including cherries and plums, complemented by floral notes and hints of sweet spices. The palate is well-structured, with firm tannins and a balanced acidity, leading to a persistent finish with subtle balsamic nuances.
Food & Wine Pairing
MaraMia pairs excellently with traditional Italian dishes such as tagliatelle al ragù, grilled meats, and aged cheeses. Its structure and acidity make it a suitable companion for rich and savory dishes, enhancing the overall dining experience.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine at 16–18°C (60–64°F) in large red wine glasses to fully appreciate its aromatic profile. Decanting for at least one hour before serving is recommended to allow the wine to open up and reveal its complexity.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with a consistent temperature between 12–15°C (54–59°F). The 2017 MaraMia has the potential to age gracefully for 10–15 years, developing additional tertiary aromas and flavors over time.
