Winery Background and History
Founded in 1999 by Susana Balbo, Dominio del Plata is a family-owned winery located in Luján de Cuyo, Mendoza, Argentina. Susana Balbo, the first female enologist in Argentina, has been instrumental in elevating the profile of Argentine wines on the global stage. The winery is known for its commitment to innovation, sustainability, and producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of Argentina. The Crios line, meaning “offspring” in Spanish, represents youthful, fresh, and fruit-forward wines designed for immediate enjoyment.
Producer and Winemaker
Susana Balbo serves as both the founder and chief winemaker at Dominio del Plata. With a degree in enology from Don Bosco University, she has over 30 years of experience in the wine industry. Balbo is renowned for her pioneering work with the Torrontés grape, often referred to as the “Queen of Torrontés.” Her son, José Lovaglio Balbo, also plays a significant role in the winemaking process, bringing a modern perspective to the traditional practices upheld by the winery.
Vineyards and Micro Climate
The grapes for the 2023 Crios Torrontés are sourced from high-altitude vineyards in the Cafayate Valley of Salta and the Uco Valley of Mendoza. These regions are characterized by their significant diurnal temperature variations, with warm days and cool nights, which contribute to the development of aromatic compounds and the retention of acidity in the grapes. The soils are predominantly sandy and alluvial, providing excellent drainage and promoting vine health.
Vinification & Aging Methods
The 2023 vintage underwent fermentation in stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures between 12–14°C (54–57°F) to preserve the grape’s aromatic profile. Post-fermentation, the wine was aged on its lees for three months, enhancing its texture and adding complexity. This method ensures a crisp, fresh wine that showcases the varietal’s characteristic floral and fruity notes without the influence of oak.
Tasting Notes
The 2023 Crios Torrontés presents a pale yellow hue with greenish reflections. On the nose, it offers intense aromas of white blossoms, lychee, and lemongrass. The palate is crisp and refreshing, featuring flavors of citrus fruits, passion fruit, and a hint of minerality. A lively acidity and a subtle creaminess lead to a long, balanced finish, making it an expressive and approachable white wine.
Food & Wine Pairing
This Torrontés pairs excellently with a variety of dishes, including sushi, spicy Asian cuisine, and seafood. Its vibrant acidity and aromatic profile complement the flavors of ceviche, grilled shrimp, and Thai curries. Additionally, it serves as a delightful aperitif, enhancing the dining experience with its refreshing character.
Service Methods and Temperatures
Serve the wine well-chilled at 8°C to 10°C (46°F to 50°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Using medium-sized white wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character. Decanting is not necessary, but allowing the wine to breathe for a few minutes after opening can enhance its bouquet.
Storage and Aging Potential
Store bottles in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2023 vintage is best enjoyed within 1 to 2 years of release to capture its vibrant freshness and aromatic intensity. While it can be consumed immediately, proper storage will maintain its quality over the short term.
