Winery Background and History

Founded in 1970 by Siro Pacenti, the estate is located in Montalcino, Tuscany. In 1988, his son, Giancarlo Pacenti, took over the winery, bringing a modern approach to winemaking while respecting traditional practices. The estate is renowned for producing high-quality Brunello di Montalcino wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region.

Producer and Winemaker

Giancarlo Pacenti, the current owner and winemaker, is known for his meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality. Under his guidance, the winery has gained international acclaim for its elegant and structured wines. Giancarlo’s approach combines traditional methods with modern techniques to highlight the purity and complexity of Sangiovese.

Vineyards and Micro Climate

The Pelagrilli vineyards are situated on the northern slopes of Montalcino, at elevations reaching up to 400 meters. The vines, aged between 25 to 35 years, are planted in clay and sandy soils, contributing to the wine’s elegance and aromatic profile. The region’s continental climate, with significant diurnal temperature variations, allows for slow and even ripening of the grapes, preserving acidity and enhancing complexity.

Vinification & Aging Methods

Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo manual sorting before and after destemming. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 24 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, followed by additional aging in the bottle. This process enhances the wine’s structure and complexity while maintaining its freshness.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Pelagrilli Brunello di Montalcino exhibits a deep ruby color. On the nose, it offers complex aromas of black cherries, truffles, white pepper, cardamom, dried cherries, blueberries, bay leaves, fresh mushrooms, and potpourri. The palate is sophisticated and weightless, with a medium to full body and finely-knit tannins. Flavors of wild mint, fennel, anise seed, and a hint of orange peel lead to a chalky, mocha finish. The wine is beautifully integrated and balanced, showcasing elegance and depth.

Food & Wine Pairing

This Brunello pairs excellently with rich meat dishes such as braised beef, lamb, and game. It complements hearty pasta dishes like penne amatriciana and traditional Italian fare such as melanzane alla parmigiana. The wine’s complexity and structure also make it a suitable match for aged cheeses and dishes featuring earthy mushrooms.

Service Methods and Temperatures

Serve the 2018 Pelagrilli Brunello di Montalcino at a temperature of 18°C to 20°C (64°F to 68°F) to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and balance. Decanting the wine for about 30 minutes before serving can help open up its bouquet and enhance its flavors. Using large, tulip-shaped red wine glasses will concentrate the aromas and allow the wine to express its full character.

Storage and Aging Potential

Store bottles horizontally in a cool, dark place with consistent temperature and humidity. The 2018 vintage has the potential to age gracefully over the next 15 to 20 years, developing additional complexity and depth. With proper cellaring, expect the emergence of tertiary notes such as dried fruits, leather, and earthy nuances, enhancing the wine’s richness and character.
